The Torch
About the role
The Torch is an Aboriginal-led, not-for-profit arts organisation that supports First Peoples who are incarcerated and recently released across Victoria to connect with culture through art.
Through our Statewide Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community Program, we support participants to develop their artistic practice, strengthen cultural connection and create opportunities for healing, empowerment and economic independence.
Our work responds to the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria’s legal system and creates meaningful pathways for First Peoples artists to share and sell their work.
The Gallery Coordinator plays an important role in the day-to-day operation of The Torch Gallery and in creating a welcoming and culturally safe experience for artists, visitors, supporters and customers.
This is a hands-on role combining customer service, gallery sales, artwork handling, online shop administration and general gallery operations. You’ll assist visitors and customers, coordinate artwork sales and dispatch, support exhibitions and displays, and help keep our online shop and artwork information accurate and up to date.
You’ll work closely with the Art Manager, Gallery Coordinator Lead and the broader Art Team to ensure the gallery runs smoothly and that artworks are handled and presented with care.
The role is permanent, 0.8 FTE and is based at The Torch Gallery in Carlton.
We’re looking for someone who is organised, reliable and enjoys working as part of a collaborative team.
You’ll be comfortable working with a wide range of people and bring strong customer service and communication skills. Experience in retail, sales, galleries, arts administration, collections or inventory management would be highly regarded.
You will also bring:
Knowledge of First Peoples art, experience working with First Peoples communities or experience within a not-for-profit organisation would be an advantage, but we encourage people who meet the core requirements of the role to apply.
As part of The Torch, you’ll have the opportunity to work within an Aboriginal-led organisation where your work directly supports First Peoples artists and communities.
Benefits include:
The salary for the position is $64,005.34 per annum at 0.8 FTE, plus superannuation and salary packaging.
To submit your application, please click ‘Apply Now’ by the closing date.
We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people with experience working respectfully with First Peoples communities.
