Transport Compliance Officer

We are seeking a highly organised, proactive and analytical Transport Compliance Officer to support the ongoing compliance and safety of our transport operations.

The successful candidate will have experience in heavy vehicle transport compliance, Chain of Responsibility (CoR), Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), NHVR requirements, fatigue management, mass management and vehicle maintenance compliance.

The role will work closely with operational management to identify compliance gaps, assess risks, investigate non-conformances and provide practical recommendations to strengthen systems and controls. The position will also monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions and provide assurance that regulatory and company requirements are being met.

What your day can look like:

·         Monitor and assess compliance with the HVNL, NHVR requirements, Chain of Responsibility obligations and company transport procedures.

·         Identify and analyse compliance gaps, trends and systemic risks across transport operations.

·         Review whether existing operational controls are effective in managing Chain of Responsibility risks.

·         Conduct internal compliance audits and reviews across areas including fatigue, mass, maintenance, load restraint, vehicle safety and driver compliance.

·         Monitor and analyse fatigue compliance, including driving hours, work and rest requirements and identified non-conformances.

·         Monitor mass management systems and review compliance with vehicle and combination mass limits, axle group limits, permits and applicable operating conditions.

·         Review heavy vehicle maintenance systems, defect management and inspection processes and identify compliance gaps or recurring issues.

·         Participate in and, where appropriate, lead investigations into transport incidents, compliance breaches and non-conformances, identifying root causes, contributing factors and system failures.

·         Monitor, coordinate and verify the completion and effectiveness of corrective actions arising from audits, incidents and compliance investigations.

·         Conduct road transport contractor audits and assess contractor compliance with HVNL, CoR and company requirements.

·         Maintain compliance registers, audit records, non-conformance records and corrective action registers.

·         Provide practical compliance advice and guidance to operational management on legislative and regulatory requirements.

·         Review proposed changes to operational practices, equipment, vehicles, routes or processes to identify potential compliance and CoR risks.

·         Interpret relevant legislation, regulations, codes, permits and regulatory guidance and communicate their operational implications to management.

·         Support internal and external audits and maintain evidence demonstrating compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

·         Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and recommend changes to policies, procedures, systems and operational controls.

·         Assist management with identifying appropriate training and competency requirements arising from identified compliance gaps.

·         Prepare compliance reports and provide management with information on compliance trends, risks, recurring non-conformances and corrective actions.

·         Support the ongoing maintenance of applicable accreditation systems, including NHVAS where applicable.

What you can bring to us:

·         Experience in a transport compliance, heavy vehicle compliance, safety or assurance role.

·         Strong working knowledge of Chain of Responsibility, HVNL and NHVR requirements.

·         Practical knowledge of fatigue management, mass management, vehicle maintenance and heavy vehicle safety requirements.

·         Experience conducting audits, compliance reviews and investigations.

·         Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify gaps, trends, root causes and systemic compliance risks.

·         Ability to interpret legislation and regulatory requirements and translate them into practical compliance advice.

·         Experience working with transport contractors and assessing compliance against legislative and company requirements.

·         Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with drivers, supervisors, managers and senior stakeholders.

·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant compliance management systems.

·         A current driver's licence.
