Shutdowns, Maintenance and Welding
About the role
SMW Group is looking for an experienced Structural Shutdown Supervisor to lead structural, fabrication and mechanical work fronts across upcoming CHPP shutdowns and major maintenance projects throughout the Bowen Basin. We are looking for an experienced field leader who knows shutdowns — someone who can take ownership of a scope, organise their crews and work fronts, identify problems early and drive safe execution through to completion.
A Boilermaker/Fabrication or Mechanical trade background is strongly preferred, with proven experience supervising structural and fixed plant works within CHPP or heavy industrial environments.
Reporting into the Shutdown/Project Management team, you will take ownership of allocated shutdown scopes from mobilisation and work-front preparation through execution, completion and handback.
You will be responsible for:
Supervising structural, fabrication and mechanical crews across CHPP shutdown activities
Managing structural repairs, replacements, modifications and installations
Coordinating work on chutes, bins, hoppers, transfer points, conveyors, platforms, walkways, handrails, platework and structural steel
Reviewing scopes, drawings, work packs and job requirements prior to execution
Ensuring labour, tooling, materials and equipment are ready for each work front
Coordinating permits, isolations and safe access requirements
Conducting pre-starts, toolbox talks, field interactions and critical control verifications
Monitoring progress against shutdown schedules and communicating delays or emerging risks early
Managing changing priorities and emergent work during shutdown execution
Maintaining quality standards and ensuring completed works are ready for inspection and handback
Providing clear communication between SMW Group crews, management and client representatives
Leading from the field and maintaining a strong standard of safety, productivity and workmanship
S1, S2 & S3 Supervisor competencies
Relevant Boilermaker/Fabrication, Mechanical or Structural trade qualification
Demonstrated experience as a Shutdown Supervisor within CHPP, fixed plant or mineral processing environments
Strong structural and fabrication knowledge
Experience supervising trade crews across high-intensity shutdown works
Sound understanding of permit to work, isolations, confined spaces, working at heights and critical risk controls
Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, fabrication drawings, work packs and scopes
Strong planning and work-front coordination capability
Ability to manage multiple crews and competing priorities within tight shutdown schedules
Strong safety leadership and field presence
Current Standard 11
Current Coal Board Medical
Current Australian Driver's Licence
Previous supervisory experience across CHPP structural maintenance, conveyors, transfer systems, chutes, bins, screens, crushers, platework, wear packages and fixed plant infrastructure will be highly regarded.
Additional competencies including Working at Heights, Confined Space, EWP and Gas Test Atmospheres will also be advantageous.
We want someone who owns their work front. You'll know where your crews are, what they're working on, what is holding them up and what needs to happen next. You'll be comfortable working directly with planners, coordinators, other supervisors and client representatives to keep the shutdown moving. Most importantly, you'll be a visible field leader who sets expectations, holds standards and makes sure the job is executed safely and properly — even when the schedule is under pressure. If you have strong CHPP shutdown experience and you're looking to join a Central Queensland business with an established presence across the Bowen Basin, we want to hear from you.
