Family Support Worker

About the role

The Family Support Worker delivers both Intensive Family Supports and Crisis Housing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, women, and children who are at risk of child safety intervention and/or experiencing family violence. The role provides culturally safe, trauma-informed, and holistic support that promotes safety, stability, dignity, resilience, and family capacity building, while supporting pathways toward long-term wellbeing and housing outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake intake, assessment, referrals, case planning, and discharge for individuals and families accessing Solid Ground's Family Programs.
• Provide direct support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, women, and children with complex needs, including child safety concerns, mental health issues, substance use, domestic and family violence, and financial hardship.
• Promote the safety, wellbeing, and best interests of children at all times by identifying and responding to child safety concerns, adhering to mandatory reporting obligations, and working collaboratively with families and relevant services to support children to remain safely connected with their parents, family, and community wherever possible.
• Develop and implement individual case management plans in collaboration with clients and families, promoting empowerment, resilience, self-determination, and positive long-term outcomes.
• Maintain a safe, welcoming, and culturally safe environment, ensuring all policies, procedures, and program requirements are followed.
• Build and maintain relationships with community partners, referral agencies, housing providers, and support services to assist clients and families in accessing housing pathways and wraparound supports.
• Assist with managing caseloads, occupancy levels, and service delivery requirements to ensure program targets and funding obligations are met.
• Ensure accurate and timely record keeping, data entry, and reporting in line with organisational and funding requirements.
• Respond appropriately to crises, behavioural incidents, and emergencies using trauma-informed, culturally safe, and de-escalation strategies.
• Participate in an on-call roster to support out-of-hours client needs within Crisis Housing services.

About you

• Certificate IV, Diploma or tertiary qualification in Social Work, Community Services, Psychology, or related field.
• Experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
• Understanding of the drivers and impacts of child safety risk, family vulnerability, and system involvement.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage competing demands and work under pressure.
• Knowledge of local social and emotional wellbeing support services.
• Current Working with Vulnerable People Card and National Police Check (or willingness to obtain).
• Valid driver's license.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation, such as the Residential Tenancies Act and Child and Youth Safe Organisations Act.
• Demonstrated understanding of the impacts of family violence and homelessness, including knowledge of trauma-informed care and culturally safe practice.
