About the role
The SNE Transmission Engineer is the technical authority for Transmission Services within the Operational Command Centre, responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, resilience, and operational integrity of the telecommunications transmission network.
The role provides advanced technical leadership and escalation support across Fibre, DWDM, and SDH platforms. As the highest level of operational escalation, the SNE Transmission Engineer leads complex fault diagnosis, restoration, problem management, and service assurance activities to minimise network impact and maximise service availability.
The role also develops operational capability through coaching, mentoring, knowledge transfer, and technical training, helping build a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting critical telecommunications services in a 24x7 environment.
Working closely with Engineering, Delivery, Field Services, Vendors, and Customer Operations teams, the SNE Transmission Engineer drives operational excellence, improves network reliability, and ensures support readiness across critical and mission-critical services.
What you’ll be doing day-to-day
Transmission Network Operations
Provide senior technical support and operational oversight across the transmission network.
Monitor network performance, capacity, availability, and resilience.
Support carrier-grade transmission infrastructure and technologies.
Review alarms, events, and trends to identify operational risks.
Lead technical investigations into complex faults and service impacts.
Maintain operational readiness across supported platforms.
Technical Leadership and Escalation
Act as the highest-level operational escalation point for transmission incidents.
Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex network faults.
Provide expert guidance to engineers and operational teams.
Support decision-making during major incidents and restoration activities.
Coordinate cross-functional teams to resolve service disruptions.
Mentor and coach engineers to strengthen transmission capability.
Participate in technical governance and architecture reviews where required.
Serve as the subject matter expert for transmission technologies.
Drive engineering best practices and operational standards.
Training, Coaching and Capability Development
Act as a technical mentor across engineering teams.
Support onboarding and technical development of new employees.
Develop and maintain training plans and competency frameworks.
Deliver technical training covering transmission platforms, fault management, restoration, and operational processes.
Conduct knowledge-sharing workshops and technical briefings.
Identify capability gaps and develop targeted learning initiatives.
Create and maintain training materials, documentation, and runbooks.
Provide coaching to enhance troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Facilitate post-incident knowledge transfer and lessons learned.
Support career development, succession planning, and graduate/junior engineer programs.
Assist leaders in evaluating technical competency and development requirements.
Foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
Incident and Service Restoration
Lead transmission fault management for critical and high-priority incidents.
Drive restoration efforts to minimise customer and network impact.
Coordinate internal teams, carriers, vendors, and field resources during outages.
Support major incident management and recovery activities.
Ensure timely communication and escalation of significant issues.
Participate in incident reviews and post-incident analysis.
Develop preventative measures to reduce recurrence.
Service Assurance and Performance Management
Monitor and analyse network performance and service quality.
Identify emerging risks, recurring faults, and degradation trends.
Drive improvements in availability, resilience, and customer experience.
Ensure compliance with KPIs, SLAs, and operational objectives.
Support capacity management and performance optimisation.
Recommend improvements to network stability and operational effectiveness.
Problem Management and Continuous Improvement
Lead root cause analysis for major incidents and recurring faults.
Develop and implement permanent corrective actions.
Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.
Drive proactive maintenance and network health initiatives.
Maintain operational standards, procedures, and technical documentation.
Contribute to service improvement and operational maturity programs.
Change and Operational Readiness
Assess operational impacts of planned network changes.
Review and approve high-risk transmission activities.
Support change planning, implementation, and validation.
Ensure teams are prepared to support new services and technologies.
Participate in change governance and implementation reviews.
Validate operational readiness for upgrades and new service introductions.
Vendor and Stakeholder Management
Work closely with vendors, carriers, and support partners.
Manage technical escalations relating to transmission services.
Engage with Engineering, Service Delivery, Customer Operations, and Program teams.
Provide technical reporting and recommendations to stakeholders.
Support customer-facing technical discussions where required.
Build strong relationships across internal and external stakeholder groups.
What you’ll bring to the role
8+ years' experience in Telecommunications Network Operations, Service Assurance, or Transmission Engineering.
Strong experience supporting carrier-grade transmission networks.
Experience with large-scale fibre transport and optical networks.
Experience supporting Government, Defence, Emergency Services, or Critical Infrastructure networks.
Proven capability troubleshooting complex faults in live environments.
Experience supporting large-scale telecommunications infrastructure.
Demonstrated leadership in incident resolution and service restoration.
Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing technical teams.
Experience producing training materials, procedures, and documentation.
Strong understanding of 24x7 operational environments.
