About the role
Permanent Full-Time | Smithton, Tasmania
Britton Timbers is a privately owned Tasmanian timber company with a strong reputation for quality, innovation and responsible forest management.
We are seeking a Forest Manager to play a key role in the management and long-term development of the Company's forest estate. Working directly with the Managing Director, you will help shape the future of our forestry operations while balancing sustainable timber production, environmental stewardship and emerging opportunities in forest carbon.
This is an opportunity to join a progressive business where your contribution will make a genuine difference. We recognise that exceptional candidates come with different backgrounds and levels of experience. Accordingly, the responsibilities of the role and remuneration package will be tailored to reflect the successful candidate's skills, experience and professional capabilities.
Whether you are an experienced Forest Manager ready to undertake a broad strategic role, or an emerging forestry professional with the aptitude and ambition to grow into the position, we encourage you to apply.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Forest Manager is responsible for the strategic and operational management of the Company's forest estate. The role combines strategic planning, executive reporting and forest carbon management with regular hands-on field work, ensuring our forestry operations are safe, sustainable and commercially successful.
You will spend significant time in the field planning, supervising and monitoring operations, working alongside employees and contractors, assessing plantations and identifying opportunities to improve the long-term performance of the forest estate.
· Managing the Company's forest estate to achieve sustainable commercial, environmental and carbon outcomes.
· Planning and overseeing harvesting, plantation establishment, silviculture, pruning, reforestation and general stand management.
· Undertaking field inspections, tree and stand assessments, and marking forest coupes for harvesting operations.
· Managing the Company's forest carbon opportunities, including preparing management plans and supporting documentation for carbon-related schemes.
· Selecting, coordinating and managing forestry contractors while monitoring safety, quality and performance.
· Leading, mentoring and training employees involved in forestry operations and plantation activities.
· Providing visible leadership in health, safety and wellbeing and promoting a strong safety culture across all forestry activities.
· Ensuring all forestry operations are planned and undertaken in accordance with the Forest Practices Act 1985, the Forest Practices Code and all other applicable legislative and regulatory requirements.
· Preparing high-level reports, management plans, recommendations and submissions for the Managing Director, including proposals supporting government funding and strategic initiatives.
· Maintaining effective relationships with contractors, consultants, regulators and other stakeholders.
· Ensure accurate and timely management of all forest management data through the company’s database.
· Experience in forestry, plantation or natural resource management desirable
· Equally comfortable preparing a management report as working in the field assessing plantations or supervising operations.
· Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
· Commitment to sustainable forest management and continuous improvement.
· Current Australian Driver Licence.
You will join a respected Tasmanian business where decisions are made locally and your contribution will directly influence the future of our forestry operations. We are committed to supporting the ongoing development of the successful candidate.
