Marine Mechanic

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and capable Marine Mechanic to join our team at Melbourne Boat Yard. The role is responsible for servicing, diagnosing, maintaining and repairing marine mechanical systems and equipment across a range of commercial and recreational vessels. The successful candidate will work closely with the yard team, boat owners and other marine trades to ensure vessels are maintained to a high standard, completed safely and returned to service efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, inspections and repairs on marine engines and associated mechanical systems.

• Diagnose mechanical faults and identify the cause of engine, propulsion and auxiliary-system issues.

• Complete engine tune-ups, component replacement, adjustments and general mechanical repairs as required.

• Work on inboard and outboard marine engines and associated systems within the mechanic's level of competency.

• Inspect, maintain and repair propulsion, cooling, fuel, exhaust, steering and other mechanical systems.

• Use appropriate diagnostic equipment, hand tools and workshop equipment safely and effectively.

• Work safely within the boatyard, workshop and onboard vessels, including vessels on hardstand and in-water where required.

• Assist with vessel haul-outs, launching, positioning and access requirements as directed by the yard team.

• Maintain a clean, organised and professional work area and ensure tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.

• Coordinate with shipwrights, electricians, yard staff and subcontractors where work interfaces with other trades.

About you

• Relevant marine mechanical qualification or trade qualification, with marine mechanical experience.

• Minimum 3–5 years' experience in a marine mechanical, boatyard, marina or commercial marine environment preferred.

• Demonstrated experience servicing, diagnosing and repairing marine engines and mechanical systems.

• Strong understanding of marine propulsion, cooling, fuel, exhaust and associated mechanical systems.

• Current Australian Driver's License & Fork Lift License.

• Relevant marine, lifting, confined-space, working-at-heights or other tickets/licences will be viewed favourably where applicable to the role.

• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Good communication skills and a professional approach when dealing with clients, contractors and colleagues.

• Ability to work outdoors, onboard vessels and in a physically demanding boatyard environment in varying weather conditions.
