Opportunity to be involved

We are looking for an experienced Director of Underwriting Cyclone to lead the management of ARPC’s cyclone reinsurance portfolio and delivery of ARPC’s underwriting administration responsibilities under the Terrorism & Cyclone Insurance Act and represent ARPC with senior insurance representatives. Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, you will establish and manage contracts of reinsurance arrangements with insurers, overseeing ARPC’s gross written premium and underwriting result, and reporting on key outcomes and trends to support the effective management ARPC’s insurance risk.

You will represent ARPC with senior insurance representatives, lead key cyclone client relationships and a small professional team, and act as a senior subject matter expert across underwriting, reinsurance and the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool.

Role responsibilities

Management of Cyclone Reinsurance Portfolio

• Manage ARPC’s cyclone reinsurance portfolio, including operational relationships with insurers, underwriting administration, premium reporting and adherence to underwriting rules and delegated authorities.
• Identify new insurer products requiring pool coverage and ensure appropriate endorsements are issued.
• Provide technical guidance to cedants on their obligations under the Terrorism and Cyclone Insurance Act and Regulations, including developing relevant practice guides and technical materials.
• Support the delivery and ongoing development of ARPC’s cyclone reinsurance offering, engaging with insurers, brokers and industry bodies.
• Analyse risk, exposure and market developments to support reporting, presentations and business decisions.
• Drive continuous improvement of underwriting procedures, guidance and processes to improve efficiency and customer outcomes.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Lead strategic and operational relationships with cyclone clients and key industry stakeholders.
• Provide authoritative information on ARPC’s reinsurance offering and build market understanding of relevant Cyclone Reinsurance Pool legislation and requirements.
• Build effective relationships across insurers, brokers, industry bodies and internal ARPC stakeholders.

Functional Leadership

• Lead and develop a small team of professionals, fostering a high-performing and continuous improvement culture.
• Establish and manage business plans and budgets for the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool.
• Mentor colleagues and contribute underwriting expertise across ARPC.

Broader Contribution

• Identify and implement business and process improvement opportunities.
• Lead and contribute to ARPC corporate projects and cross-functional initiatives.
• Maintain strong commercial and market awareness to contribute to ARPC’s short, medium and long-term business planning and development.

Candidate attributes

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Business, Finance or a related field – Mandatory
• Qualified or prepared to study toward ANZIIF Fellow or Associate level – Desirable

Experience

• Minimum five years’ experience in reinsurance underwriting or client management – Mandatory
• Technical knowledge of the insurance, reinsurance or financial services sector – Mandatory
• Relevant experience in high-level technical writing for different audiences and formats, including drafting papers and market articles – Mandatory
• Knowledge of Commonwealth Government, particularly connections to Treasury or the Department of Finance – Desirable

• Ability to identify and drive continuous improvement across products, processes, technology solutions and business efficiencies.
• Sound legislative and regulatory interpretation and application skills.
• Strong attention to detail and proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

The role is based in Sydney.
