Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Nurse Consultant (PAC CNC) to join the Preadmission Clinic team based at the Ambulatory Care Centre in Epping. This is a fixed-term position until 29 January 2027 at 0.2 EFT.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role:

The Preadmission Clinic (PAC) Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) works closely with the Perioperative Anaesthetic Team to provide specialist nursing services for patients requiring anaesthetic assessment, perioperative risk identification and preoperative optimisation in accordance with anaesthesia department guidelines.

This role is responsible for providing advanced clinical assessment and management of patients attending PAC through face-to-face and telehealth consultations, including identification and escalation of complex and high-risk medical conditions, coordination of investigations, specialist reviews and optimisation prior to surgery.

The PAC CNC provides expert clinical leadership and support to Surgical Liaison Nurses (SLNs) and the multidisciplinary team by guiding patient triage, supporting complex clinical decision-making, and ensuring patients are directed to the most appropriate PAC pathway based on their surgical requirements and perioperative risk.

The role contributes to improving patient outcomes through the implementation of evidence-based perioperative practices, including Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), prehabilitation and perioperative medicine principles. The CNC also leads and participates in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, service evaluation and process improvements to enhance the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of PAC services.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Extensive clinical experience in perioperative nursing, preadmission assessment, anaesthesia or a related specialty area, with demonstrated knowledge of perioperative risk assessment and management.Demonstrated advanced clinical assessment skills and the ability to independently identify, manage and escalate complex and high-risk patient conditions.Proven ability to provide expert clinical advice, leadership and support to nursing staff and multidisciplinary teams in complex clinical decision-making.Well-developed communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with patients, carers, medical, nursing and allied health professionals.Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate evidence-based clinical practice improvements, including participation in audits, quality improvement activities and service reviews.Experience in clinical education, mentoring and supporting the professional development of nursing staff.Demonstrated commitment to patient-centred care, clinical governance, safety and continuous improvement within a complex healthcare environment.
