About the role
About the role
The Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant supports the clinical team across all aspects of patient care and clinic operations, working alongside ophthalmologists, optometrists, and orthoptists in a specialist eye care setting. This role involves diagnostic testing, patient preparation, and clinical support duties similar to those of an orthoptic technician, and offers strong exposure to both general ophthalmology and refractive/cataract surgical care. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in ophthalmic or orthoptic practice, with a genuine pathway to a Clinical Lead position available for the right candidate.
Key responsibilities
Welcome patients and explain procedures and tests in plain, reassuring language
Prepare patients for clinical assessment and diagnostic testing (e.g., dilation, positioning, instillation of drops as directed)
Take relevant patient history and update clinical notes as required
Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and confidentiality
Perform pre-testing and diagnostic assessments under the direction of ophthalmologists, including visual acuity, autorefraction, tonometry, and visual fields (HVF)
Operate ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic equipment including OCT, fundus camera, visual field analyser, and corneal topographer
Capture accurate, high-quality images and results as requested by ophthalmologists
Support pre- and post-operative assessments for patients attending the refractive and cataract suite
Maintain equipment cleanliness, calibration, and readiness for use
Accurately upload and label images and test results in patient management systems
About you
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in clinical testing and documentation
Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with patients, including those who may be anxious or have impaired vision
Comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical and surgical environment
Basic computer literacy and ability to learn clinical and imaging software
Team-oriented, reliable, and proactive, with a genuine interest in ophthalmic/orthoptic care
Preferred: OCT, HVF (Humphrey Visual Fields)
