Summary:

Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NBY) is seeking an exceptional strategic leader to join our Executive Team as Executive Strategy, Research & Policy.

This is a rare opportunity to influence policy, shape regional and national conversations, and help deliver transformational outcomes for Yawuru people through strategic planning, research, government relations and advocacy. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will play a critical role in advancing Yawuru aspirations across culture, community, economic development and self-determination.

For the right candidate, this role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of one of Australia's leading Indigenous organisations and the wider Broome area while living and working on the stunning coastline of Yawuru Country in Broome.

The Opportunity

This role sits at the center of strategic influence and organisational leadership.

You will lead the development of strategic policy frameworks, research agendas and government engagement activities that support Yawuru priorities and strengthen NBY's position as a respected Aboriginal organisation and regional leader.

Working closely with the CEO, Board, Executive Team, Traditional Owners, government agencies, industry leaders, researchers and funding partners, you will transform complex challenges into practical strategies that create meaningful and measurable impact.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

• Leading organisational strategic planning and policy development.
• Providing high-level strategic advice to the CEO, Board and Executive Team.
• Driving research projects that inform advocacy, investment and decision-making.
• Developing policy positions, submissions and advocacy strategies.
• Building and maintaining influential relationships across government, academia, industry and the Aboriginal community-controlled sector.
• Identifying emerging policy, legislative and funding opportunities.
• Leading strategic partnerships that advance community-led development and economic opportunities.
• Managing strategic projects, budgets and reporting requirements.
• Leading and mentoring a small team while strengthening organisational capability in policy, strategy and impact measurement.

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking a strategic thinker, skilled communicator and influential leader who can operate confidently across community, government and executive environments.

You will bring:

• Significant experience in strategic planning, policy development, research, government relations or public affairs.
• Outstanding written communication skills with experience preparing high-quality policy papers, submissions, business cases and strategic documents.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking capability.
• Experience influencing policy and organisational decision-making.
• Demonstrated success building partnerships and engaging senior stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of Aboriginal affairs, governance, Native Title and Closing the Gap priorities.
• Proven leadership and project management experience.
• A genuine commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and community-led outcomes.

Postgraduate qualifications and experience in Indigenous affairs, government policy, research, economic development, evaluation or impact measurement will be highly regarded.

Essential Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualification in public policy, Indigenous studies, law, economics, development studies, social sciences or a related discipline.
• Current C Class Driver's Licence.
• National Police Clearance.
• Working With Children Check.
