Mechanical Engineer

Watkins Steel fabricates structural steel out of Banyo, and the work doesn't slow down. As our project pipeline grows, we're after a Mechanical Engineer to bridge the gap between the design and what actually happens on the fabrication floor.

This isn't a purely desk-bound role. You'll review and validate structural steel designs and assembly drawings, work through the calculations that back them up, then walk the floor to see how it all comes together. Scheduling and budgets sit with the Project Director, but you'll be right in the middle of that planning, not off to the side of it.

What the role involves

• Reviewing and validating structural steel designs and assembly drawings, backed by your own engineering calculations

• Spotting risks and inefficiencies, including likely points of mechanical failure, before they become a problem on site

• Supporting the Project Director with scheduling and budgeting, plus resourcing decisions across live projects

• Coordinating with structural engineers and drafters on the floor, so what the fabrication team builds actually matches what was designed

• Keeping across the mechanical side of installation and commissioning, plus ongoing maintenance where it's needed

• Preparing and reviewing engineering documentation and QA records, and checking the work stacks up against the relevant codes and WHS requirements

• Looking for ways to improve fabrication workflows, including where digital tools such as Power BI or CAD/CAM genuinely help rather than add complexity

• Reporting to the Project Director and senior management, liaising with clients and suppliers, and helping bring junior engineers up to speed

What we're after

A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline is required. Eligibility for Engineers Australia membership is a plus but not a dealbreaker. What matters more is a genuine grasp of mechanical systems and materials, real familiarity with steel fabrication processes, and enough hands-on comfort with CAD or 3D modelling software that you're not learning it on the job. You'll also need to be organised enough to run your own workload across several projects at once, and just as comfortable talking to a Project Director as you are talking to a fabricator on the floor.

We're less interested in a polished CV than in whether you can actually think a mechanical problem through and explain your reasoning to someone who isn't an engineer.
