Independent journalism is at the centre of our mission. We report on the companies, people, projects, policies and decisions shaping one of Australia’s most important industries with a focus on journalism that is accurate, timely and genuinely useful to the people working within it. 

Our editorial position is pro-information, independent in judgement and useful by design. 

As The AMR grows its daily newsroom, reports, events and specialist coverage, we are looking for a Senior Journalist who will help expand our reach, authority and delivery. 

About the role 

The Senior Journalist will be a key member of The AMR’s newsroom, responsible for producing original, authoritative reporting across the Australian mining industry. 

This is not a role focused on rewriting announcements. The role is intended to strengthen the depth and originality of The AMR’s journalism. We are looking for a journalist who is curious about how the industry works, develops sources, asks the right questions and can identify the story behind company announcements, financial results, regulatory decisions and industry trends. 

You will cover breaking and daily news while also developing your own industry reports, interviews and features. You should be as comfortable speaking directly with chief executives as you are speaking with site workers and technical specialists. You should be confident and motivated to pursue stories where the answers are not immediately available. 

As a senior member of a growing newsroom, you will also help lift journalistic standards across the team by sharing knowledge, contributing to editorial discussions and supporting less experienced reporters. 

This is an in-office position and includes regular attendance in office four days per week.  

Responsibilities 

Report ahead of the curve and write accurate, engaging and timely news about the Australian mining industry. 

Monitor breaking news, ASX announcements, company results, regulatory developments and emerging industry issues. 

Develop original stories rather than relying solely on company announcements and media releases. 

Build and maintain a strong network of sources across mining companies, suppliers, government, regulators, industry organisations and the wider resources sector. 

Conduct interviews with senior executives, technical experts, government representatives and other industry sources. 

Produce in-depth reporting, analysis, profiles and longer-form features alongside daily news. 

Work collaboratively with the Managing Editor, analyst, research, sales and editorial team to determine daily and longer-term coverage priorities. 

Develop and deliver The AMR’s quarterly reports and major thought leadership projects by diving below the surface and illuminating the data behind the industry. 

Attend industry events, media briefings, conferences and site visits where relevant. 

Mentor developing journalists and provide constructive editorial guidance where required. 

Sub-edit work from other journalists and step in for the Managing Editor when required. 

Represent The AMR publicly at our events via live interviews and speaking engagements.

Basic qualifications 

5+ years of journalism experience, ideally in business, resources, finance, politics, energy or another complex reporting field. 

Fluency in economics, markets and science — you should be as comfortable reading an annual report as a peer-reviewed geology study. 

A fluid, clear and vivid writing style and the ability to not just report but to tell a story. Excellent writing is a must. 

Demonstrated range: the ability to turn a daily news story and a 4,000-word feature with equal skill. 

Comfort with data: the ability to interrogate a dataset and recognise the story in the numbers. 

Experience independently developing and pursuing stories. 

Strong interviewing skills and confidence dealing with senior and specialist sources. 

Strong attention to accuracy, sourcing, attribution and detail. 

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-moving newsroom. 

Strong understanding of media and fundamental journalism ethics. 

Preferred skills 

Experience covering mining, resources, energy or Australian business. 

An established network of industry or business sources. 

Experience mentoring junior reporters or contributing to newsroom editorial standards. 

Experience developing new approaches to reporting, including data, multimedia and digital storytelling.

You will have the backing of The AMR to pursue original journalism: to develop sources who call you when something is happening, spot stories others miss and ask the questions that turn an announcement into something worth reading.
