About the role
We are seeking an experienced Criminal Lawyer to join our team at our Port Adelaide office on a full-time basis. As a Criminal Lawyer, you will play a vital role in providing expert legal representation to clients facing criminal charges, ranging from summary offences to serious criminal matters. This position is integral to our practice, enabling us to deliver robust defence strategies and support to our clients during critical times. You will work collaboratively with our team whilst maintaining client confidentiality and upholding the highest standards of legal practice.
Key responsibilities
Providing comprehensive legal representation to clients in criminal matters across all court levels, including the District Court, Magistrates Court, and Supreme Court
Conducting detailed case analysis, legal research, and preparation of defence strategies
Drafting and filing legal documents, pleadings, motions, and other court submissions
Conducting pre-trial negotiations, bail applications, and plea discussions
Preparing and cross-examining witnesses during court proceedings
Advising clients on their legal rights, options, and potential outcomes
Maintaining detailed case files and ensuring compliance with court procedures and deadlines
Liaising with prosecution, courts, police, and other relevant parties
Keeping clients informed throughout all stages of their case
Contributing to the development of effective case management and client service practices
What we're looking for
Admission to practise as a lawyer in South Australia with a current practising certificate
Minimum of 2 years' experience in criminal law practice, either as a defence lawyer or prosecutor
Strong knowledge of criminal law, evidence law, and court procedure
Proven experience in conducting trials, cross-examinations, and courtroom advocacy
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines effectively
Strong interpersonal and client relationship management skills
Sound legal research and analytical capabilities
Professionalism, integrity, and adherence to legal and ethical standards
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
Experience in matters involving Magistrates Court and higher courts is desirable
