Services Australia
About the role
Services Australia maintains a register of people interested in temporary (non-ongoing) employment opportunities in various roles, levels, and locations throughout Australia.
We may use this register to temporarily fill health professional roles requiring mandatory qualifications, across a range of levels from APS5 to APS6.
This Temporary Health Services Register includes roles in the fields of Social Work and Health and Allied Health professions.
Social Workers – APS5 to APS6
Social workers help individuals, families, and communities so people can get on with their lives. They provide professional assessments, crisis intervention, short-term counselling, advocacy, information, and referrals for people with complex needs and circumstances.
Social workers build staff capability and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support people experiencing vulnerability.
They prioritise high risk cohorts including people at risk of suicide or self-harm, people affected by family and domestic violence, young people without adequate support and people impacted by disasters and emergencies.
Social workers practice within ethical, policy and legislative frameworks using a professional evidence base to provide holistic, culturally safe, trauma-informed services.
Health and Allied Health Professional - Assessor – APS6
Assessors are health and allied health professionals who work directly with Services Australia customers in a customer-focused environment. Using professional knowledge and clinical judgement, assessors evaluate people with medical, psychological or social barriers to employment to determine their capacity to work, medical eligibility for Services Australia payments, and suitability for referral to employment service programs. Assessors are also responsible for documenting their professional evaluations and assessment outcomes in clear, accurate and evidence-based reports in accordance with legislative, policy and quality requirements.
Assessments are primarily conducted via telephone but also includes video conferencing and face-to-face engagements, requiring assessors to confidently navigate and utilise multiple computing systems while engaging with customers.
In addition to professional qualifications, the role requires strong competency in navigating computing systems and managing customer information.
Assessors may be exercise physiologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, registered nurses, rehabilitation counsellors, speech pathologists or social workers.
Applicants must hold the relevant qualification and (if applicable) professional membership for a number of these roles. More information about these essential requirements and mandatory qualifications can be found in the job pack.
In accordance with section 22(6) of the Public Service Act 1999, Services Australia requires applicants to be Australian citizens to be eligible for employment with Services Australia.
An applicant’s suitability for employment with the agency will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes but is not limited to a national police history check, referee checks, code of conduct check and an employment history integrity check.
Some positions within Services Australia may be required to work in settings where mandatory vaccinations are required. Staff in such positions will need to demonstrate that they meet the vaccination requirements or have a relevant exemption.
Services Australia’s workforce operates using an agile approach, and all staff should be prepared to redeploy to critical frontline functions as required. Should you need to redeploy as part of the agency’s surge workforce, all learning and development and technical/pastoral support will be provided to you to enable you to undertake that work.
The location of available roles will depend on the role type and vacancy. We will ask you to nominate at least one location preference in your application.
Social Work and Health and Allied Health (Assessor) roles may be available nationally.
Temporary Employment Registers are open for candidates to submit interest for non-ongoing employment within Services Australia. Submitting an application to a Temporary Employment Register does not guarantee you will receive an offer of temporary employment.
