Senior Financial Accountant
Join the City of Melville in a key financial leadership role supporting strong governance, effective decision-making and sustainable financial outcomes for our community.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Financial Accountant to lead our Financial Accounting function and ensure the City’s financial systems, records, controls and reporting remain accurate, compliant and efficient.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a dedicated team, oversee complex financial reporting activities and provide trusted advice to leaders, committees, Council and auditors. You will also play an important role in strengthening financial processes, systems and controls across the organisation.
Location: City of Melville Civic Centre
Salary: Level 9 | Up to $160,000.00 pro-rata p.a. + 12% Super
Employment Type: Permanent Full Time
What You’ll Be Doing
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will provide leadership across the City’s financial accounting activities, with a strong focus on:
Leading and developing the Financial Accounting team, including work planning, staff supervision, service delivery and customer focus.
Coordinating monthly and annual financial statements, statutory returns, year-end processes, reconciliations and audit working papers.
Maintaining accurate and compliant financial, asset, taxation and accounting records.
Overseeing general ledger integrity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, treasury, investments and financial system controls.
Managing audit liaison activities and coordinating responses to audit findings.
Providing practical financial accounting, taxation, asset accounting, systems and reporting advice.
Supporting financial planning, budget development, performance reporting and Long-Term Financial Plan activities.
Reviewing and improving accounting policies, procedures, systems, workflows and controls.
Building strong working relationships across the organisation and delivering coordinated financial support and training.
Identifying financial issues, evaluating options and recommending practical improvements that strengthen compliance, efficiency and reporting quality.
What We’re Looking For
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
A tertiary qualification in accounting, finance or a related discipline and/or professional membership with CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or an equivalent professional accounting body.
Comprehensive financial accounting experience, including statutory reporting, reconciliations, financial controls, audit liaison and year-end processes.
A current National Police Clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain one.
Demonstrated experience supervising, supporting and developing employees in a finance or accounting environment.
Strong knowledge of accounting standards, taxation, treasury, asset accounting and internal control requirements.
The ability to interpret legislation, policies, procedures and financial information and provide practical, accurate advice.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports, briefings, correspondence and advice.
Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet critical deadlines.
Experience using financial systems, databases, Microsoft Office applications and reporting tools.
Experience within Western Australian local government or another public sector environment will be highly regarded. Experience with local government statutory reporting, annual budget processes, investments, grants, rates, asset accounting, audit liaison or Technology One will also be advantageous.
