About the role

As a Child Consultant, you will provide specialist support to children, young people and parents experiencing family separation, with a particular focus on the Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) process.

You will provide children with an opportunity to have their voice heard, engaging them in therapeutic and developmentally appropriate discussions about their experiences, feelings and needs. Using a trauma-informed and child-centred approach, you will support children to communicate what is important to them and provide thoughtful, balanced feedback to parents to help them better understand their child's perspective and developmental needs.

Working closely with Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners (FDRPs), you will support families experiencing separation, conflict, family violence and parenting challenges, while helping parents understand the purpose and expectations of child-inclusive processes.

Additionally, you will:

• Conduct specialised child and family sessions, including therapeutic and assessment-based discussions.
• Provide sensitive and meaningful feedback to parents about their child's experiences, wellbeing and needs.
• Prepare parents for child-inclusive processes and clearly explain expectations around sessions and feedback.
• Provide expert advice to FDRPs and clients, informed by evidence-based practice.
• Work collaboratively with FDRPs throughout the FDR process.
• Deliver psychoeducational sessions for separated parents.
• Maintain strong relationships with mediators and other stakeholders.
• Maintain appropriate client records, risk documentation and confidentiality.
• Participate in clinical supervision and ongoing professional development.
  

About you

You are a skilled and compassionate practitioner who is passionate about child-centred practice and giving children a voice during family separation. You are confident engaging children in therapeutic conversations and creating a safe, supportive environment where they can express themselves.

You understand the importance of trauma-informed practice and are comfortable having sensitive conversations with parents, providing clear and constructive feedback about their child's experiences and needs. You can build strong relationships with children, families and professionals and bring sound clinical judgement, resilience and professionalism to your work.

Additionally, you have:

• A relevant undergraduate qualification in Behavioural Science, Social Work, Psychology or a related discipline.
• Experience providing counselling, therapeutic or educational interventions, assessment and support to children, young people and families.
• Experience engaging children in therapeutic or assessment-based discussions.
• Knowledge of child development, family systems, separation, grief and loss and family violence.
• Knowledge of the Family Law Act 1975 and child protection legislation.
• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience managing complex caseloads and competing priorities.
• A commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive and reflective practice.

Annual salary on offer starts from $91,000 plus superannuation (pro rata for part-time) to be negotiated depending upon qualifications and experience.
