Wanted: A Support Worker Who Doesn't Walk Away When Support Gets Challenging

Let's be honest about this one.

This isn't the support-worker role where every shift involves heading to the movies, grabbing a coffee and going for a drive.

Some days will be challenging.

You'll be supporting individuals who may display complex or behaviours of concern, and you'll need the patience, confidence and experience to understand that behaviour is communication.

There may be difficult moments.
There may be days when progress feels tiny.

But when you finally build that trust...

When someone who has previously struggled to engage starts responding to you...
When you learn what helps them feel safe...
When a situation that previously escalated can be supported differently...

Those wins can be incredibly rewarding.

That's why we're looking for someone with more than just a Support Worker title on their resume.

The Role You'll be supporting NDIS participants across Northside Brisbane who may have complex support needs and behaviours of concern.

Your role isn't to "control" behaviour.

It's to understand the person, follow their Behaviour Support Plan, recognise triggers, support regulation and use proactive strategies to reduce the likelihood of escalation.

You'll be expected to:

• Build genuine, consistent relationships with participants
• Follow individual Behaviour Support Plans
• Recognise triggers and early warning signs
• Use appropriate de-escalation strategies
• Support participants through periods of emotional or behavioural dysregulation
• Implement positive behaviour support strategies consistently
• Support daily living skills and independence
• Assist with personal care where required
• Support community access when appropriate
• Maintain clear and accurate progress notes and incident documentation
• Communicate effectively with families, clinicians and the broader support team
• Follow all safeguarding, reporting and organisational requirements

Let's Talk About Restrictive Practices

Some participants may have regulated restrictive practices included within an authorised Behaviour Support Plan.

That makes experience in this area valuable.

But let's make something very clear.

Restrictive practice isn't a shortcut for managing difficult behaviour.

Any regulated restrictive practice must only be used where authorised, in accordance with the participant's Behaviour Support Plan, relevant legislation and NDIS requirements.

The goal should always be to support the person in the least restrictive way possible, while maintaining safety, dignity and choice.

We want Support Workers who understand that distinction.

Who We're Looking For We're looking for experienced Support Workers who don't panic when a shift becomes challenging.

You'll ideally have experience supporting people with:

• Complex behaviours of concern
• Autism and intellectual disability
• Emotional dysregulation
• Positive Behaviour Support Plans
• De-escalation strategies
• Regulated restrictive practices
• Complex communication needs
• High-support environments

You'll also need the usual essentials, including relevant NDIS Worker Screening, First Aid/CPR, appropriate working-with-children clearance where required, driver's licence and other employment screening relevant to the position.

Additional behaviour support, restrictive practice, trauma-informed care or high-intensity support training will be highly regarded.

What We're Really Looking For We're looking for calm.

Someone who doesn't turn a participant's escalation into their own escalation.
We're looking for consistency.

Because trust can take weeks or months to build and seconds to damage.
We're looking for curiosity.

Instead of thinking:

"How do I stop this behaviour?"
You start thinking:
"What is this person trying to communicate?"

And we're looking for someone who understands that success doesn't always look spectacular.

Sometimes success is getting through a transition that normally causes distress.
Sometimes it's recognising a trigger five minutes earlier.
Sometimes it's helping someone regulate without escalation.

And sometimes...

It's simply having someone who normally doesn't engage with workers choose to sit beside you.

That's a win.

What This Isn't Let's save everyone some time.

This isn't an easy shift where you spend half the day driving around listening to Spotify.

It's not sitting on your phone waiting for the shift to finish.

And it's definitely not a role for someone who sees challenging behaviour and immediately labels the participant as "difficult."

The individual you're supporting isn't giving you a hard time.

They're having a hard time.

Your job is to understand what is happening, follow the agreed support strategies and help create an environment where they can feel safe and supported.

You'll have the opportunity to work with people who may have struggled to find consistent workers who understand them.

Building that connection won't necessarily happen on shift one.
But when it does...

You'll know you've earned it.
