About the role
The Assistant Building Surveyor – Commercial supports the Victorian Commercial Surveying team in delivering high-quality building surveying services across a diverse portfolio of commercial projects. Working under the guidance of Registered Building Surveyors and senior staff, this role is designed for individuals who are developing their professional experience in the commercial sector, while ensuring compliance with the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018, National Construction Code (NCC), and other relevant standards.
Key responsibilities
Assist in conducting inspections on commercial developments to assess structural, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Support the assessment of architectural and engineering plans against applicable codes, including the NCC, Disability Discrimination Act, fire safety provisions, and energy efficiency standards.
Help prepare and lodge relevant statutory documentation including building permits, occupancy permits, and certificates of final inspection.
Maintain accurate records of site inspections, correspondence, and regulatory documentation.
Liaise professionally with builders, architects, clients, and statutory authorities under the supervision of a Registered Building Surveyor.
Monitor permit conditions and assist in ensuring timelines and compliance milestones are met.
Stay informed on updates to legislation, regulations, and standards relating to commercial construction in Victoria.
Actively participate in professional development activities, internal training sessions, and industry workshops.
Support broader project delivery through collaboration with colleagues in the domestic, retail, or specialist teams where required.
Uphold high standards in client service, professional integrity, and quality assurance.
About you
Currently studying or recently completed a Degree or Advanced Diploma in Building Surveying (or equivalent).
Understanding of the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018, and NCC as they apply in Victoria.
Intention to register as a Building Surveyor (Limited) or Building Inspector with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA).
Have at least 3 years experience in the field of building surveying
Strong interest in building compliance and commercial construction.
Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written.
High attention to detail with the ability to interpret drawings, plans, and legislation.
Ability to manage time effectively and work to deadlines.
Willingness to learn and contribute as part of a team.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and exposure to relevant industry software (e.g. CAD, permit systems) is a plus.
Previous experience or student placement in a commercial building surveying or construction compliance role is desirable.
