Metal Fabricator

About the role

This is a hands-on skilled trade role for a qualified Metal Fabricator. You'll spend time in the shed fabricating the structural steel and building modules from engineering drawings, and head out with the crew on install trips to assemble them on remote community sites across the north. Work is variable with project demands rather than a fixed roster.

Key responsibilities

• Marking out, cutting, shaping and assembling metal sections, plates and structural components.

• Fabricating, repairing and modifying metal products and structures using engineering drawings and specifications.

• Operating welding and metal fabrication equipment to manufacture and repair metal components.

• Reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints and specifications to ensure accurate fabrication.

• Fabricating the cyclone-rated flat-pack building modules in our Berrimah workshop, then travelling with the crew to assemble and install them on remote community sites.

• Installing, maintaining and repairing fabricated metal structures and equipment on site.

• Inspecting completed work to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and quality standards.

• Carrying out repairs, modifications and maintenance on fabricated metal products and structures.

• Ensuring all work is performed in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements.

About you

• A trade qualification in engineering fabrication (e.g. Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade) or equivalent skills and hands-on experience.

• At least 2 years demonstrated experience in metal fabrication and structural steelwork.

• Proficiency in welding (MIG mostly) and confident use of workshop fabrication equipment.

• Ability to use CAD software and CNC machines.

• Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and specifications.

• A current driver's licence — a Medium Rigid (MR) truck licence is an advantage.

• A Construction Induction (White Card), or willingness to obtain one.

• Self-sufficiency and a genuine willingness to travel and work on remote install trips — long drives, remote camps and dry communities come with the job.

We're Between 23° (BETWEEN23 PTY LTD), a Darwin-based prefab building company and a growing team. We design and manufacture flat-pack, cyclone-rated buildings in our Berrimah workshop and install them in remote Indigenous communities across the Top End — Arnhem Land, the Tiwi Islands, the Kimberley and further afield. Recent projects include a school and staff housing in Arnhem Land and a ranger workshop on the Tiwis. We work primarily for Indigenous-owned organisations and ranger programs. Our design-and-construct approach sits between a shed kit and a custom build, and quality steel fabrication is at the heart of what we do.
