Central Victorian Cardiology
About the role
Bendigo, Victoria | Flexible Part-Time / Casual Sessions
We are seeking a motivated and patient-focused General Practitioner (GP) to join our established specialist cardiology practice, providing medical supervision for Exercise Stress Echocardiography (Stress Echo) testing.
This is an excellent opportunity for a GP with an interest in cardiovascular medicine to work within a highly experienced cardiac diagnostic team, alongside Cardiac Technicians, Cardiac Sonographers, Nurses and Cardiologists.
The GP's primary role is to provide medical oversight throughout the exercise component of Stress Echo testing, including assessing patient suitability, monitoring clinical status and responding to any symptoms, ECG changes or other clinical events that may arise.
The echocardiographic imaging and technical components of the examination are performed by experienced cardiac sonographers and technical staff.
You will also have direct access to Cardiologist support when required.
Previous Stress Echo experience is advantageous but not essential, with appropriate orientation and training available for suitable applicants.
Provide medical supervision for Exercise Stress Echocardiography testing.
Review relevant patient history and assess suitability for exercise stress testing.
Assess patients prior to commencement of testing.
Monitor patient safety and clinical status throughout the exercise procedure.
Recognise and appropriately manage abnormal symptoms, ECG changes, arrhythmias, blood pressure responses and other clinical events.
Determine when testing should be modified or ceased for clinical reasons.
Work closely with experienced Cardiac Technicians and Cardiac Sonographers throughout each procedure.
Escalate significant findings or clinical concerns to the consulting Cardiologist when required.
Maintain accurate clinical documentation relating to the stress test and any clinical events.
Follow established clinical protocols, emergency procedures and quality standards.
Contribute to a high standard of patient care within a collaborative specialist environment.
Work within a modern and established specialist cardiology practice.
Support from experienced Cardiac Technicians, Cardiac Sonographers, Nurses and administrative staff.
Direct access to on-site Cardiologist support.
Structured and predictable weekday clinic sessions.
Flexible working arrangements, including part-time and casual opportunities.
Minimal administrative burden compared with traditional general practice.
No routine general practice consulting or ongoing patient management responsibilities associated with the role.
Opportunity to develop practical experience in cardiovascular diagnostics.
Supportive, collegial and multidisciplinary working environment.
Orientation and training in Stress Echo procedures for suitable applicants without previous Stress Echo experience.
Opportunities to further develop skills across other areas of cardiac diagnostic testing.
Applicants must have:
Current registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA.
Fellowship of RACGP, ACRRM, or equivalent recognised General Practice qualifications.
Current CPR certification.
Strong clinical assessment and emergency management skills.
Confidence recognising and managing acute clinical deterioration.
Excellent communication and patient care skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team.
The following would be highly regarded but are not essential:
Previous experience with Exercise Stress Testing or Stress Echocardiography.
An interest in cardiovascular medicine.
Experience interpreting ECGs.
Experience recognising exercise-induced arrhythmias, ischaemic ECG changes and abnormal haemodynamic responses.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.
This opportunity may particularly appeal to a GP seeking:
A procedural and diagnostic-focused role outside traditional general practice.
Regular, predictable clinic sessions.
Reduced administrative workload.
Flexible hours and improved work-life balance.
Exposure to specialist cardiology and cardiovascular diagnostics.
The opportunity to work alongside experienced cardiac clinicians.
An additional role that can complement existing General Practice commitments.
An opportunity to develop new clinical skills within a supported specialist environment.
You do not need to be an experienced Stress Echo practitioner to apply.
We welcome interest from experienced GPs as well as GPs who have a strong interest in cardiovascular medicine and would like to develop their skills in exercise stress testing within a well-supported cardiology practice.
For GPs wishing to expand their cardiovascular knowledge and diagnostic skills, additional opportunities may also be available to gain experience across other areas of cardiac testing and diagnostics.
Join a highly regarded cardiology team dedicated to delivering high-quality cardiac diagnostic services and patient care across regional Victoria.
If you are looking for a flexible clinical role that offers exposure to specialist cardiology, predictable sessions and the opportunity to develop additional cardiovascular skills, we would welcome your application.
