Yard hand

The Yard Person is responsible for the day-to-day presentation, maintenance, and operational readiness of trucks, trailers, and yard equipment. The role supports the operations team by keeping all vehicles and yard areas clean, safe, and ready for service.

This position is classified under the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 [MA000089] at Level 1. The role requires a person who takes pride in their work, follows safety instructions without being prompted, and works reliably as part of a team.

Duties include:

• Wash and clean prime movers, rigid trucks, and trailers inside and out

• Operate pressure washers, steam cleaners, and chemical wash equipment safely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures

• Shift trailers within the yard as directed by the Yard Supervisor, using a yard truck

• Couple and uncouple trailers safely, including connection and disconnection of air lines, and electrical leads

• Remove and replace truck and trailer tyres using appropriate equipment, including jacks, bead breakers, tyre changers, and torque wrenches

• Check tyre pressures on all fleet vehicles as part of scheduled inspections and inflate or deflate to the manufacturer’s specified pressures

• Maintain the yard, workshop surrounds, and wash bay in a clean, tidy, and hazard-free condition at all times

• Store load restraint equipment correctly when not in use to prevent damage and ensure it is ready for rapid deployment
