About the role
Employment Type: Temporary Full Time
Position Classification: Post Grad Fellow
Hours Per Week: 40
Requisition ID: REQ669639
An exciting opportunity is available for a dynamic individual to join the Intensive Care Unit at St George Hospital as a Post Graduate Fellow with an expanded non-clinical portfolio spanning ICU medical education, simulation, research and clinical governance. This position is full time (1.0FTE) for a 12-month fixed term. Applicants must be able to operate at a consultant level in Intensive Care service delivery, with senior support available at all times.
Clinical duties comprise 50% of hours worked on the consultant roster, across all ICU clinical pods, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical and trauma ICU, and outreach. The remaining 50% (non-clinical time) is dedicated to leading and developing ICU education and simulation, research and to clinical governance activities, working closely with the Directors of Education/Simulation and Research/Clinical Governance and their teams. Specific tasks and objectives will be defined by negotiation with the successful candidate.
Education & Simulation
• Facilitate and take a lead role in ICU medical education, including simulation-based workshops, BASIC and ICU RISC courses.
• Assist in the development of new ICU simulation curricula and contemporary education and simulation methods.
• Manage the weekly teaching program (Tuesday and Friday mornings) of tutorials, journal clubs and guest lectures.
• Supervise and teach junior colleagues, including Advanced Trainees, Resident Medical Officers and nursing staff, including supervision of ward rounds.
Clinical Governance & Quality Assurance
• Participate in the established ICU Research and Clinical Governance Program, with a focus on the clinical governance and quality assurance components.
• Understand the role of clinical governance in monitoring quality and safety, including defining measurable indicators/standards for service evaluation.
• Develop, design and lead quality improvement projects and clinical audits pertinent to the department.
• Contribute to personal development and growth aligned with the department's education, simulation and clinical governance priorities.
Research
Candidates with an interest in research are welcome to negotiate a research component within the non-clinical portfolio. This may include participation in the Clinical Research Program, understanding national and state research governance, ethics and regulatory frameworks, applying ethical principles in the design and conduct of clinical research, and developing research projects under the guidance of the Director of Research. This is an optional pathway rather than a core requirement of the role.
