About the Role

• Part Time, 35 Hours/Week, Term Time Only

Purpose    

The role is part of the Cocurricular Music Leadership Team which is a decision-making body for the School’s cocurricular music program (tuition and ensembles) streams. The purpose of this position is to lead the woodwind program within the Music Department.

Duties

• Teach group woodwind lessons
• In conjunction with other members of the Cocurricular Music Leadership Team, recruit new students into the Music Tuition Program
• Prepare pupils for internal examinations and performances as well as, if necessary, external opportunities 
• Monitor and give feedback on progress via the department’s reporting system 
• Lead, monitor and support private woodwind teachers within the School
• Ongoing development of a woodwind curriculum (group teaching) that adheres to the School’s learning framework (Effective Thinking Cultures) 
• Monitor and maintain department equipment with a specific responsibility for overseeing the development of woodwind facilities, instruments, and resources
• Oversee the preparation and use of budget allocations for the woodwind program
• Organise the annual Woodwind Performance Awards
• Attend weekly Cocurricular Music Leadership Team meetings with the aim of developing the effectiveness and profile of Music within the School
• Make a positive contribution to the efficient running of the Department, including attending departmental meetings, undertaking administrative and other tasks as delegated by the Director of Music (Cocurricular)
• Enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the Department through sharing resources and good practice, lesson observation, collaborative teaching, mentoring and active participation in continuing professional development 
• Actively safeguard and promote the welfare of children 
• Support the school’s aims and objectives for teaching and learning 
• Adhere to and promote all BGS policies and procedures
• Conduct selected cocurricular music ensembles with a focus on Concert Bands and Jazz/Big Bands. This involves:
  • The selection of age-appropriate, diverse and engaging repertoire that fosters ensemble cohesion, expression and professional performance standards
  • Weekly rehearsals, regular concerts & performances, possible tours & camps, and other associated activities
  • In conjunction with the Director of Music (Cocurricular) and other members of the Cocurricular Music Leadership Team, support the activities of auditioned and chamber ensembles within the Ensemble Program while also promoting soloist opportunities and cross-disciplinary collaborations

Essential Skills

• Excellence as a teacher. Teacher registration is an advantage but not essential
• Advanced skills as a conductor with experience in Concert Bands and Jazz/Big Bands an advantage. Possible involvement in the school’s orchestral program would also be helpful
• The ability to work within a team both as an inspirational leader of a small team (woodwind) and as a part of a larger team (Music Department) 
• Awareness of Safeguarding requirements and good practice within a school setting.
