The Larrakia people are the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters in and surrounding Darwin, including Darwin Harbour. The Larrakia, consisting of nine family groups, are ‘saltwater people’ with over 2,600 people living in and around Darwin.
For over 20 years the Larrakia people have pursued plans for a cultural centre. In 2020 the Larrakia Development Corporation announced the first significant step in this journey which has culminated in the Larrakia Cultural Centre that is currently under construction at the feet of the Larrakia sacred site at Stokes Hill overlooking Darwin Harbour.
The project has had significant contributions to the design and purpose of the Centre from the Larrakia community. Our logo and building design evokes a Larrakia ancestral being: a bird in flight protecting the land and the people. This is guiding principle of the Larrakia Cultural Centre, whose vision is to preserve and protect Larrakia culture, language, arts and traditions for future generations.
Culture is at the core of the Larrakia Cultural Centre business model, which is far more than a physical structure. The LCC will be a place where Larrakia people can celebrate, preserve and share their culture through art, language, story-telling, education programs and ceremonies.
The Centre will have permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, workshop, performance and public spaces, along with a kiosk, a restaurant and retail shop providing employment, business and income opportunities to support our vision and purpose.
Significant progress for the Centre’s permanent collection has been made with the recent return of culturally significant objects from museums in Australia, the UK and US.
This unique and high-profile role requires a visionary leader who can balance cultural integrity with commercial sustainability through diverse revenue streams and capacity to productively interact with First nations people.
The Centre is scheduled to open to the public in the next few weeks, this being preceded by a cultural celebration with Larrakia families with the Official Opening is scheduled for October.
We are looking for our new CEO to potentially join us for this Opening and commence as soon as practical thereafter, leading our team and the Centre to success.
