About Apex Essential Services
Apex Essential Services is an ambitious, newly established essential services group with a clear strategy to build a significant national business across the plumbing and electrical sectors.
Our growth strategy combines strong organic growth with an active acquisition and consolidation strategy, targeting established, profitable plumbing, electrical and complementary essential-services businesses across Australia.
We are now seeking an experienced Non-Executive Director to join our Board and help guide Apex through its next stage of strategic growth, acquisitions and integration.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to join Apex at an early stage and play an influential role in building a substantial national essential-services group.
We are particularly interested in an experienced operator, entrepreneur, CEO, senior executive or director who has successfully grown a business through a combination of organic expansion and M&A.
Ideally, you will have experience within plumbing, electrical, HVAC, facilities management, building services, trade services, industrial services or another fragmented service industry where acquisitions have played an important role in growth.
This is not intended to be a passive board appointment.
We are looking for someone who can bring commercial judgement, operational experience and an acquisition mindset to the Board while maintaining the independence and governance expected of a Non-Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
As a Non-Executive Director, you will work alongside the Board and executive team to:
Provide strategic guidance on the long-term direction and growth of Apex Essential Services.
Help develop and challenge the Group’s acquisition and consolidation strategy.
Assist in identifying and evaluating potential acquisition opportunities.
Provide commercial input into acquisition structures, valuation, due diligence and negotiations.
Guide management on post-acquisition integration, including systems, people, culture, branding and operational efficiencies.
Help establish a scalable operating model capable of supporting multiple businesses and locations.
Challenge and support management in relation to financial and operational performance.
Review budgets, forecasts, capital allocation and major investment decisions.
Monitor key business risks and ensure appropriate risk-management frameworks are established.
Provide oversight of regulatory, legal, workplace safety and corporate governance obligations.
Bring independent judgement and constructive challenge to Board discussions and major strategic decisions.
Mentor and support the CEO and senior leadership team.
Assist with executive capability, organisational structure and succession planning as the Group expands.
Contribute industry knowledge, commercial relationships and networks that may assist Apex’s growth.
Help establish appropriate Board governance, reporting and performance disciplines as the organisation grows.
Act in the best interests of the company and fulfil the statutory and fiduciary responsibilities of a company director.
About You
We are looking for a commercially minded director with a strong track record of building and scaling businesses.
The ideal candidate will have:
Significant experience as a CEO, Managing Director, COO, founder, senior executive or Non-Executive Director.
Demonstrated experience growing a business from a smaller operation into a substantial multi-site, multi-business or national organisation.
Hands-on M&A experience, ideally including identifying, acquiring and integrating privately owned businesses.
Strong understanding of acquisition due diligence, valuation, transaction structures and post-acquisition integration.
Experience in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, facilities management, trade services, building services, industrial services or a related sector would be highly regarded.
Strong commercial and financial acumen.
Experience developing management teams, operational systems and organisational structures to support rapid growth.
An understanding of corporate governance, risk management and directors’ responsibilities.
The confidence to constructively challenge management while remaining highly supportive of the executive team.
Strong business networks and the ability to open doors where appropriate.
AICD qualifications would be well regarded but are not essential where the candidate has substantial operating and board-level experience.
The Person We Are Looking For
Above all, we are looking for a proven operator.
Someone who understands what it takes to acquire businesses, integrate them successfully, improve their performance and build a larger organisation without losing the entrepreneurial qualities that made those businesses successful in the first place.
You may have previously built or led a buy-and-build, roll-up or industry consolidation strategy, or have been part of an organisation that successfully completed multiple acquisitions.
You will be strategic enough to operate at Board level, but commercial and practical enough to understand the realities of building a fast-growing services business.
Why Join Apex?
Apex is at the beginning of an ambitious growth journey.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape the strategy, acquisition model, governance and operating structure of the Group from an early stage.
For the right individual, this represents an opportunity to play a meaningful role in building one of Australia’s leading privately owned essential-services groups.
Remuneration: Appropriate Non-Executive Director remuneration will be offered, commensurate with experience and expected contribution including monthly director fees and equity incentives.
