Irrigationist

About the Role

The Irrigationist will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of irrigation systems on the Abbottsleigh Blueberry Farm. This entails the achievement of optimum farm production and together with the Agronomist and Farm Manager, ensure the development of the farming property for maximum productivity. Early starts and weekend work to ensure operational requirements are met may be required. Previous experience in a similar role will be highly regarded.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate irrigation assets and fertigation systems on farm

• Experience using the Mait system would be advantageous

• Report to the Agronomist on water use, on-farm water measuring device information and irrigation strategies

• Ensure the ongoing maintenance of irrigation equipment and systems on a regular basis to maintain efficiency and optimise production.

Irrigation Practices

• Monitor and adjust irrigation programs as directed by the Agronomist, Farm Manager and external consultants

• Monitoring and reporting of farm irrigation and fertigation operations

• In conjunction with the Agronomist, co-ordinate repairs and maintenance of farm irrigation infrastructure and equipment

• Develop best horticultural practices by continually monitoring and analysing soil, climate, irrigation, equipment and farm drainage

• Ensure all farm irrigation equipment and facilities are maintained in a clean and tidy state

• In conjunction with the Agronomist, establish and manage trials through to conclusion.

Health and Safety

• Ensure any safety issues that are identified are rectified as a matter of urgency

• Provide direction and support for the overall farming group safety strategy.

Supplier Management, Quality and Stock Control

• Establish and maintain close contact with farm irrigation suppliers and contractors

• Assist the Agronomist in seeking tenders annually or as directed on major farm expenses e.g. irrigation supplies and systems

• Monitor and record farm inventory levels of consumables, chemicals and fertilisers to ensure the farm is not carrying unnecessary levels of stock.

Systems and Procedures

• Ensure all farm irrigation records & reports required for operation are completed and maintained

• Ensure all irrigation quality system documents are maintained and updated as appropriate and oversee Quality, Compliance and Safety Audits across the farm irrigation assets.

Skills & Knowledge

Trade Qualifications:

• At least 2 years (38 hours or more per week) relevant experience

  • Or least a relevant AQF Certificate II or equivalent, AND at least 1 year (20 hours or more per week) relevant post qualification experience

• Hydroponic growing experience (Berries an advantage)

• Good computer skills (MS Office, production systems)

• Good literacy and numeracy skills for record keeping

• Mechanical aptitude

• Clear communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills

• Previous experience in a similar role will be highly regarded.

• Weekend, public holiday and overtime work is required.
