Senior Cloud Engineer – Microsoft Azure
Canberra Consulting is seeking experienced Senior Cloud Engineers to support a significant cloud modernisation initiative within a Federal Government environment.
We are looking for highly capable, hands-on Azure professionals who can provide technical leadership across the design, implementation, migration and optimisation of secure Microsoft Azure environments.
This is an excellent opportunity for experienced cloud engineers who enjoy combining deep technical delivery with architecture, security, automation and knowledge transfer within a complex and highly regulated environment.
The Role
As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will contribute to the establishment and ongoing development of secure, scalable and resilient Microsoft Azure cloud services.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the design, build and configuration of Microsoft Azure platform services.
- Establishing and maintaining Azure landing zones, networking, identity, monitoring, security and governance services.
- Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using technologies such as Bicep, Terraform or equivalent.
- Designing and implementing Azure cloud-native and PaaS services.
- Supporting the migration of applications and services from legacy environments into Microsoft Azure.
- Designing and implementing Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines and associated automation.
- Contributing to solution architecture, technical designs and implementation planning.
- Implementing cloud security, identity, monitoring, backup and disaster recovery capabilities.
- Supporting security assurance, compliance, accreditation and remediation activities.
- Producing high-quality technical documentation, implementation guides, architectural artefacts and operational procedures.
- Providing technical leadership, mentoring and knowledge transfer to internal technical teams.
- Working collaboratively with architects, developers, cyber security specialists and project stakeholders.
- Identifying opportunities to optimise cloud performance, reliability, scalability and cost.
About You
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
- 5+ years' professional experience in cloud engineering or a closely related technical role.
- Strong hands-on experience designing and implementing Microsoft Azure environments.
- Demonstrated experience with Infrastructure as Code, including Bicep, Terraform or similar technologies.
- Strong experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and DevOps/DevSecOps practices, preferably using Azure DevOps.
- Sound knowledge of cloud architecture principles, design patterns and engineering best practices.
- Experience delivering secure, compliant and scalable cloud solutions.
- Experience supporting cloud migration activities within complex enterprise environments.
- Strong cloud security, identity, networking, monitoring and governance knowledge.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and team collaboration skills.
- Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring or knowledge transfer.
- Experience working within Australian Government or similarly secure and regulated environments will be highly regarded, particularly where you have worked with security, risk and assurance frameworks such as ISM, PSPF and IRAP.
- Experience with technologies such as Windows Server, SQL Server, SharePoint, .NET Framework, Angular, IIS and Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) would also be advantageous.
- Relevant Microsoft Azure certifications, such as Azure Administrator or equivalent, will be viewed favourably.
Security Requirements
- Candidates must be able to obtain an Australian Government Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance.
- Existing Australian Government security clearances will be highly regarded.
Working Arrangements
- The engagement will be based in Canberra / ACT, with hybrid working arrangements available subject to operational requirements.
- Candidates must be located in the ACT or surrounding region and able to routinely attend the client site when required.
Contract
- Initial 12-month engagement
- Potential extension options
- Full-time engagement of up to 37.5 hours per week
- Anticipated commencement: October 2026
