Head of Department (Business)

The Rockhampton Grammar School is seeking a Head of Department: Business to join our School, commencing in 2027. 

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced educator and leader who is passionate about excellent teaching and learning and who can inspire a department to achieve outstanding outcomes for students and the School.

The Rockhampton Grammar School was founded in 1881 and is an independent co-educational day and boarding school, educating and caring for students from Prep to Year 12, as well as the Early Learning Years. The School is the largest independent boarding school in Queensland and the second largest co-educational boarding school in Australia. It is a leading school in regional Queensland and one of the foremost schools in regional Australia. The Rockhampton Grammar School has achieved great success in the academic, cultural, sporting and vocational fields over the past 145 years. The School has a total enrolment of over 1,500 (Prep to Year 12) students who are exposed to our broad curriculum, giving effect to our commitment of Grow in Character and Scholarship. 

As Head of Department, you will shape the vision and direction of the Business Department, leading curriculum design, mentoring and developing staff, fostering innovation, and ensuring every student experiences exceptional teaching and learning in line with the School's values.

POSITION TITLE: Head of Department: Business

DEPARTMENT: Secondary

CLASSIFICATION:  Full-Time, 5 Year Tenure

REPORTS TO: Head of Secondary School (Academics)

As Head of Department, in addition to the expected role of all teachers (below), you will:

• Provide strategic direction and foster a culture of high expectations, innovation, and continuous

improvement within the Business Department;

• Lead the design, delivery, and review of curriculum programs, ensuring alignment with the Australian

Curriculum v9 and the new senior syllabus;

• Lead, mentor and develop departmental staff, including performance development, induction and supporting

their professional growth;

• Utilise data and evidence-based practice to monitor and analyse student performance to inform teaching

practice and maximise student outcomes and wellbeing;

• Engage in professional learning and encourage innovation in teaching practice;

• Build positive partnerships with parents, universities, alumni and external networks;

• Contribute actively to the wider School community;

• Oversee departmental resources, budgets, timetabling, and day-to-day operations to ensure efficient

functioning of the department;

• Ensure departmental practices meet school policies, safeguarding standards, and regulatory requirements;

• Contribute to the profession, for example pre-service teacher training and publication of articles that

promote excellence;

As a Teacher, you are expected to:

• Design and implement curriculum programmes that embrace School's Learning Framework;

• Create an engaging learning experience and positive classroom environment that enhances student

learning, engagement, growth and achievement;

• Establish and review students' learning goals/outcomes and modify curriculum programmes accordingly;

• Continuously reflect on teaching practices and fully participates in the School's Personal Learning

Programme;

• Build relationships and share teaching insights with colleagues in order to coordinate activities for

students;

• Demonstrate expertise in your teaching discipline and a commitment to contemporary teaching practice;

• Communicate with parents about student learning;

• Demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to professional development;

• Contribute to the School and wider community through involvement in co-curricular activities;

• Maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.

• Undergo periodic “national criminal history record” checks;

• Report to management any criminal charges or convictions you receive during the course of your employment that may indicate a possible risk to children and young people.

REQUIRED LICENCES/CERTIFICATES 

As per the Conditions of Employment section –

• Registered with Queensland College of Teachers (QCT);

• Safeguarding Children Online Training Certificate.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The successful applicant will be subject to a “Working with Children Check and Criminal Records Check” where applicable. The School undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children and young people in its care. This includes reference checks, identity checks, qualification check and professional registration checks.
