Java Technical Lead

This established Australian software vendor develops and supports a sophisticated enterprise platform used to deliver complex customer solutions.

Combining product technology with customer-focused delivery, the business is appointing a Java Technical Lead to strengthen the technical direction of its Delivery function. This role will ensure customer development work is well designed, scalable, secure and aligned with the wider platform architecture.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on technical leadership role positioned between software engineering, solution architecture and customer delivery.

Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will lead the technical delivery of customer development outcomes while building the capability of a team of software engineers. You will remain close to the technology, providing architectural direction, resolving complex engineering challenges and contributing hands-on when required.

You will work closely with the Technical Manager, Portfolio Manager, Professional Services Manager and Delivery Managers to translate customer priorities into clear technical designs and practical engineering approaches.

The role requires someone who can balance customer requirements, delivery timelines, platform integrity and long-term maintainability.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the technical design and delivery of complex customer software solutions.

- Translate customer requirements into clear technical designs and engineering approaches.

- Provide technical direction to a team of Java software engineers.

- Act as a trusted solution architecture adviser to customers.

- Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable and aligned with platform standards.

- Remain hands-on with software design, technical problem-solving and development when required.

- Guide engineers through architectural decisions, technical challenges and delivery trade-offs.

- Mentor and develop engineers while strengthening technical capability across the team.

- Establish strong engineering practices, accountability and development discipline.

- Work with Delivery Managers to plan resources, coordinate development activity and achieve customer milestones.

- Manage team utilisation and technical delivery priorities effectively.

- Balance delivery speed with software quality, maintainability and future platform evolution.

- Build strong working relationships with customers and stakeholders across the business.

About You

You are an experienced Java Technical Lead, Lead Software Engineer or Senior Java Engineer who has led the delivery of complex software solutions within a software vendor, SaaS, platform or product engineering environment.

You combine strong technical judgement with the communication skills required to work directly with customers, delivery leaders and senior business stakeholders.

Your background will include:

- Significant professional software development experience using Java as a core technology.

- Experience leading the technical direction of a software development team.

- Strong hands-on engineering capability and current technical credibility.

- Experience designing and delivering complex software solutions in production environments.

- A strong understanding of modern software design, scalable architecture and engineering practices.

- Experience translating customer requirements into practical technical solutions.

- The ability to balance delivery speed, maintainability and platform integrity.

- Experience mentoring developers and building engineering capability.

- Strong problem-solving skills and confidence navigating architectural trade-offs.

- Excellent customer-facing communication and stakeholder management skills.
