Biala School for Specialised Education, located in the beautiful coastal town of Ballina, is seeking a passionate and experienced SLSO (School Learning Support Officer) to join our team. Biala School services the areas of Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Byron Bay, Lismore, Woodburn, and Ballina.
Established in 1969, Biala School is the only independent school in Ballina dedicated to providing specialist education and services for students with disabilities. The school operates five classrooms, organised by students age and stage of learning, ranging from 4 years old through to transition beyond school.
As a small, independent school, Biala offers a curriculum that seamlessly integrates academic learning, life skills, and community access. Each student has an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) designed to meet their unique needs and support their growth in the most effective way possible.
The Role
SLSOs at Biala School support classroom teachers in delivering high-quality learning programs, as well as implementing strategies for students with complex learning disabilities. Our SLSOs play a crucial role in helping students recognise and reach their full potential, while promoting independence, self-confidence, and respect for diversity. The successful candidate will have a strong passion for specialised education and be able to work collaboratively within a small team of dedicated teachers and support staff.
This is a fixed-term, part-time position until December 2026, with the possibility of extension. The role is three days per week during NSW school terms, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. As a not-for-profit organisation, Biala School also offers eligible employees access to salary packaging benefits.
Essential Criteria
The ideal candidate will have:
A Cert III or IV in School-Based Education Support (essential)
Experience working with students with a variety of disabilities (highly desirable)
A genuine enthusiasm for supporting students with disabilities and helping them reach their potential
The ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
Strong organisational, communication, and administrative skills, including the ability to follow schedules
A demonstrated ability to work independently and make informed decisions with supervisor support
Excellent communication skills with staff, students, and families, maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality

Working With Children Check, National Criminal History Check, First Aid & CPR, full driver’s license.
