Head of Performance Music

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and accomplished Head of Performance Music to lead the ongoing development, strategic direction and delivery of Instrumental Music and Voice at Sheldon College.

Commencing in 2027, this is a key leadership role within the Faculty of The Arts, responsible for the creative vision, strategic direction and day-to-day operation of the College's broad Performance Music program. The successful applicant will lead a contemporary and innovative program with a strong focus on quality performance, student development and continuous improvement.

The Performance Music program spans the full range of instruments and includes the compulsory Year 3 String and Year 4 Band Programs, individual and group tuition, and a broad range of bands and ensembles performing across internal and external events.

Working closely with the Director of The Arts and other College leaders, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across the Performance Music program, including staff development, ensemble offerings, events, resource management, risk management and community engagement.

About You  

We are seeking a strategic and collaborative leader with demonstrated expertise in Performance Music and the ability to lead both people and programs.

You will bring:

• Demonstrated leadership experience within Performance Music and/or The Arts.
• Demonstrated expertise and experience in Instrumental and Performance Music teaching.
• Expertise in directing Music ensembles.
• A strong understanding of contemporary Instrumental and Vocal teaching practices.
• Demonstrated capacity to develop and implement strategic initiatives that support continuous improvement.
• Strong organisational, administrative and resource management skills.
• Experience leading and supporting the professional growth and development of staff.
• Ability to build strong, positive and respectful relationships with students, families and staff.
• Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to be diplomatic, resourceful and adaptable.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and competing demands effectively.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work autonomously while contributing collaboratively to a broader leadership team.
• Highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
• Enthusiasm for promoting Performance Music within the College and wider community.

Qualifications & Experience

• Eligibility to hold a Queensland Working with Children Blue Card and/or registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.
• A degree qualification in Music or Education from a recognised university or college is preferred.
• Membership of relevant professional associations is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

As Head of Performance Music, you will:

• Lead the strategic direction and continuous improvement of the Performance Music program.
• Provide leadership and oversight of Performance Music events and performances.
• Lead and develop Instrumental Music and Voice programs across the College.
• Review and develop ensemble offerings to ensure they are diverse, viable and responsive to student interests and skills.
• Lead staff development, mentoring, professional learning and performance management within Performance Music.
• Oversee the creative and logistical planning of events and productions, including workforce planning and resource management.
• Support the development of The Arts Strategic Plan and broader College strategic priorities.
• Develop effective communication and operational processes across Performance Music staff.
• Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, volunteers and the wider community.
• Oversee risk assessment and risk management across the Performance Music program.
• Promote innovation and contemporary approaches to Instrumental and Vocal teaching.
• Contribute to College-wide events and activities, including events outside normal school hours.
