Counsellor – Carer Assistance Program – 12 month contract - Remote role

Queensland Foster and Kinship Care (QFKC) is seeking a compassionate and experienced Counsellor to join our expanding Carer Assistance Program (CAP). This meaningful role provides trauma-informed, evidence-informed therapeutic support to foster and kinship carers across Queensland, helping strengthen carer wellbeing and sustain safe, stable caring relationships for children and young people.

About the role

The Counsellor will provide confidential, short-term counselling interventions to approved foster and kinship carers, and carers who have been approved within the previous 12 months. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the role delivers individual, couple and group interventions that respond to grief, loss, trauma, burnout, anxiety, depression, relationship concerns and caregiver stress.

Key responsibilities

• Provide confidential, trauma-informed therapeutic counselling to foster and kinship carers.

• Deliver evidence-informed interventions, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, psychoeducation and other appropriate therapeutic approaches.

• Provide individual, couple and group interventions for grief, loss, trauma, burnout, anxiety, depression and relationship concerns.

• Develop and facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups.

• Maintain accurate client records, electronic case notes and documentation in line with organisational, legislative and funding requirements.

• Respond appropriately to suicide risk, child protection concerns and critical incidents.

• Participate in clinical supervision, reflective practice, professional development, service evaluation and continuous improvement.

• Build effective relationships with referring agencies and key stakeholders and promote the Carer Assistance Program.

About you

• Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling, or another relevant counselling qualification.

• Demonstrated experience supporting clients experiencing grief, loss, trauma, caregiver stress and burnout.

• Understanding of the Queensland child protection and family-based care system.

• Knowledge of attachment, child development, family systems, intergenerational trauma, strengths-based practice and suicide risk assessment.

• Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and values, with a demonstrated commitment to culturally safe practice.

• Highly developed interpersonal, engagement and communication skills, including emotional intelligence and the ability to build therapeutic relationships.

• Excellent written communication and case documentation skills.

• Commitment to reflective practice, clinical supervision and continuous professional development.

• Demonstrated commitment to QFKC values of respect, integrity, collaboration, inclusion and positive outcomes for children, young people and carers.

Employment details and benefits

• Current Blue Card and current Queensland driver license required.

• Reports to the Senior Team Leader, Counselling Program, for day-to-day operational supervision.

• Monthly external clinical supervision provided.

• Employment conditions are subject to Management Committee conditions, the SCHADS Award Level 5.2, associated regulations and the Fair Work Act 2009.

• Nine-day fortnight arrangement.

• Birthday leave and three days of gifted Christmas leave.

• Remote position – Queensland Statewide applications encouraged.

• 12 month contract with likely extension dependent on funding.
