Community Health Support
About the role
Paramedic / Healthcare Professional – Pre-Hospital & Emergency Care
Community Health Support (CHS)
Sydney – Eastern Suburbs
Part-time – minimum 3 days per week | Full-time considered for the right candidate
Community Health Support (CHS) is a community-based emergency response organisation providing rapid support to people experiencing urgent and emergency medical situations.
Our clinical model is delivered primarily by trained volunteers, supported by healthcare professionals and operational staff. Together, they provide high-quality early care and appropriate escalation to NSW Ambulance or other alternative healthcare pathways.
As CHS continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced clinician and educator to lead the education, assessment and ongoing clinical development of our predominantly volunteer responder workforce.
www.chsnsw.org.au
The RoleThe Clinical Education Lead will lead the education, assessment, progression and ongoing clinical development of CHS responders, most of whom contribute their time as volunteers.
This is a hands-on clinical leadership role spanning the full responder development pathway — from initial training and competency assessment through to progression, continuing education and maintenance of clinical standards.
The role will also coordinate clinical quality assurance, case review and clinical governance activities, and support the work of the Clinical Advisory Committee (CAC). You will help ensure that lessons from clinical cases, incidents and emerging practice are translated into practical improvements in education and frontline care.
Importantly, we are looking for a clinician with genuine out-of-hospital emergency care experience. The environment in which our predominantly volunteer responders operate is fundamentally different from hospital-based clinical practice. The successful candidate therefore needs to understand the realities of assessing and managing patients in uncontrolled, resource-limited and time-critical out-of-hospital environments, as well as the particular opportunities and challenges involved in educating and supporting volunteers.
We expect the successful candidate will most likely be an experienced paramedic, or alternatively another healthcare professional who has relevant out-of-hospital, pre-hospital or emergency response experience.
Hospital emergency or critical care experience is valuable, but hospital-based experience alone would not ordinarily provide the background we are seeking for this position.
The position is available on a part-time basis of at least three days per week, with full-time employment available for the right candidate.
We require someone who can provide consistent and predictable availability. This is a substantive role requiring dedicated working time and is not intended to be completed around an unpredictable rotating clinical roster or primarily in personal time. Regular availability is important so that training, assessments, meetings and responder development can be planned in advance.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and continually improve CHS's clinical education and responder development program.
Coordinate the responder pathway from onboarding and initial training through to competency assessment, progression, skills maintenance and continuing professional development.
Plan and deliver practical, theoretical, simulation and scenario-based education relevant to CHS's scope of practice and out-of-hospital emergency care.
Conduct and oversee competency assessments, apply progression standards consistently, and identify further development where required.
Develop and maintain competency frameworks, assessment tools, education resources and appropriate training, assessment and progression records.
Support and develop CHS trainers and assessors.
Identify individual and organisation-wide education needs through assessment, case review, clinical incidents, responder performance and emerging practice.
Coordinate clinical case review and quality assurance processes, including review of selected cases, documentation and incidents.
Provide constructive feedback to responders, identify recurring clinical themes and risks, and ensure lessons from review are incorporated into education and responder development.
Work closely with clinical and operational leadership to improve the consistency and standard of frontline care delivered by volunteers.
Coordinate the work of the Clinical Advisory Committee, including preparing relevant cases, clinical issues, policies and supporting material, and tracking resulting actions.
Assist with the development and review of clinical guidelines, procedures, competencies and scope-of-practice documentation.
Support clinical incident review and broader clinical governance processes, including the evaluation and implementation of new equipment, practices and programs.
Help translate clinical governance requirements into practical systems that work effectively within CHS's volunteer-led operational environment.
You are an experienced clinician who combines strong out-of-hospital clinical credibility with demonstrated capability as an educator.
You enjoy developing other clinicians and responders and are comfortable teaching, assessing competency, providing feedback and making sound decisions about readiness for progression.
You also understand how to engage, support and develop volunteers with varied levels of clinical experience and availability.
Essential experience and attributesCurrent professional registration as a Paramedic or other Healthcare Professional.
Clinical experience managing acutely unwell or injured patients.
Experience delivering emergency care in an out-of-hospital, pre-hospital or comparable environment.
Demonstrated experience in clinical education, training or professional development.
Experience assessing clinical skills and competency.
Strong contemporary knowledge of emergency and pre-hospital clinical practice.
Ability to make sound and defensible judgements regarding clinical competency and progression.
Strong communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with volunteers and support their ongoing engagement and development.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of an education and development program while collaborating closely with clinical and operational leadership.
Capacity to provide regular and predictable availability of at least three days per week.
This role would ideally suit an experienced paramedic with a strong education background, or an appropriately experienced Healthcare Professional who has worked meaningfully in the out-of-hospital emergency environment.
You may currently work in an ambulance service, retrieval service, emergency response organisation or another pre-hospital setting and be looking for an opportunity to have a broader impact on the development of clinicians and volunteer responders.
Alternatively, you may be an emergency or critical care nurse who has also developed substantial experience outside the traditional hospital environment.
We are less concerned with a particular job title than with finding someone who understands what good out-of-hospital emergency care actually looks like, can teach it effectively, can assess whether others are competent to deliver it, and has the judgement and credibility to help develop our clinical workforce.
You will also need to be comfortable working in an organisation where most responders are volunteers. This means being able to set clear standards while creating an encouraging, respectful and practical learning environment that supports people who contribute their time outside their primary employment and other commitments.
Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who wants this to form a genuine and consistent part of their working week. We need to be able to plan education, assessments, meetings and development activities in advance, rather than fitting the role around an unpredictable rotating roster.
Why Join CHS?This is an opportunity to have an impact beyond your own individual clinical practice.
You will play a central role in shaping how CHS's predominantly volunteer responder workforce is trained, assessed and developed, while helping strengthen the clinical systems that support their work.
The role offers:
Significant ownership of CHS's clinical education and responder development program.
The opportunity to shape competency, assessment and progression frameworks as the organisation grows.
A practical clinical leadership role rather than a purely administrative education position.
The opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the development of volunteer responders.
Close collaboration with experienced clinicians, organisational leadership and the Clinical Advisory Committee.
Flexibility around the structure of a minimum three-day working week.
The opportunity for full-time employment for the right candidate.
Salary packaging benefits associated with employment in a not-for-profit organisation.
