About us

The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote archipelago. The ALC officially commenced in 1991; replacing the role previously carried out by the Northern Land Council. The ALC functions to ascertain and express the wishes and opinions of the Anindilyakwa people as to the management of the land and sea in the Groote archipelago region, to protect interests of Traditional Owners, to assist in protection of sacred sites, to assist Anindilyakwa people in traditional land claims, to negotiate with persons desiring to obtain an estate or interest in the land, to assist Traditional Owners in carrying out commercial activity, and to supervise and provide administrative and other assistance for Land Trusts holding Indigenous land in the Groote archipelago region.

ALC is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Health & Safety Business Partner to join the ALC Team, for an immediate start. Reporting into the Head of People & Culture, you will be responsible for delivering the full remit of health and safety functions for the Land Council.

Responsibilities include but not limited to;

• working collaboratively with department Managers to embed a proactive health and safety culture,
• develop, interpret and implement WHS policies and processes and frameworks in accordance with relevant legislation,
• lead and oversee investigations and case management ensuring procedural fairness is undertaken
• manage end-to-end Comcare claims and act as the main point of contact with Comcare and the Land Council to ensure PCBU obligations are adhered to
• incidents and hazard reporting and conducting risk assessments
• design wellbeing programs and initiatives
• manage WHS projects including change management processes from a risk perspective
• driving continuous improvement and promoting best practice.

About you

• Demonstrated extensive WHS experience at an advisory or business partnering level with the ability to interpret and apply the legislation in a complex and high‑risk work environment.
• Demonstrated capability in managing complex WHS related matters, including incident investigations, ensuring procedural fairness aligned with organisational and legislative requirements.
• Deep understanding of WHS Act 2011 coupled with demonstrated experience developing, interpreting, and implementing WHS policies and frameworks at an organisational level, with the ability to assess, adapt and evolve to legislative change.
• Proven ability to lead WHS related workforce projects, including change management involving multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, and financial impact, using structured project management approaches to deliver sustainable outcomes.
• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and influencing skills, with demonstrated experience engaging effectively with executive leaders, managers, employees, government bodies, and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity, with the ability to provide culturally appropriate WHS advice and support, particularly when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees, communities, and governance structures, while upholding confidentiality, integrity, and respect.
• Demonstrated capacity to operate with a high degree of independence and professional judgement, managing competing priorities, exercising discretion over sensitive matters, and providing trusted advice that supports sound organisational decision‑making.
• Ability to travel and stay in community for up to 2-5days at any given time
