About the role
Synopsis
The Treasury is seeking EL1 officers who are interested in contributing to Australia’s foreign investment screening framework. Several opportunities are available in the Investment Review Branch within Treasury’s Foreign Investment Division.
Job Overview
Treasury’s Investment Review Branch assesses foreign investment proposals against national interest, national security and regulatory considerations. The branch supports confidence in Australia’s foreign investment framework while protecting Australia’s national interest.
As an EL1 Investment Review Officer, you will lead the assessment of complex matters, prepare advice for the Treasurer, senior executives and the Foreign Investment Review Board, and support decisions on individual investment proposals. You will work with investors and advisers, Commonwealth, state and territory agencies, the National Intelligence Community, and teams across Treasury to identify issues, test information and develop practical approaches to managing risk.
This role is suited to officers who exercise sound judgement, communicate clearly and contribute to a high-performing regulatory environment.
What You’ll Do
Investment Review Officers under limited direction will:
Lead and manage complex foreign investment assessments from allocation through to recommendation and decision. Analyse proposals against relevant legislation, policy settings, precedent, consultation outcomes and risk information. Prepare decision briefs, submissions and correspondence that clearly set out issues, options, risks and recommended outcomes. Coordinate consultation with investors, advisers and government stakeholders to test information and resolve issues relevant to the assessment. Support consistent decision-making by guiding case strategy, reviewing analysis and helping case officers strengthen their work.
Investment Review Officers May Also Be Required To
Contribute to operational improvement projects, including changes to processes, policy implementation, ICT systems and data use. Help teams identify risks early, consider mitigation options and maintain consistent approaches across related matters. Coach case officers through complex assessments while maintaining responsibility for their own caseloads. Exercise delegated decision-making responsibilities on foreign investment submissions, where required.
Successful Applicants Will Demonstrate
Sound judgement and analytical capability, including the ability to identify key issues, assess risk and make balanced recommendations in complex regulatory matters. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present clear, concise and persuasive advice for senior decision-makers. Confidence engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to build trust, test information and work through sensitive or contested issues. A practical and proportionate approach to risk, with the ability to develop solutions that are defensible, workable and consistent with legislative and policy settings. Strong organisational skills, resilience and discretion, including the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work within timeframes. Leadership capability, including the ability to guide others, share expertise and contribute to a positive, collaborative and high-performing team culture. A commitment to continuous improvement, including an interest in strengthening processes, capability, data use and operational effectiveness. Professionalism, integrity and a strong commitment to supporting Australia’s national interest through effective foreign investment regulation.
