Apprentice baker

About the role

Common Bakery is seeking a passionate and dedicated Apprentice Baker to join our team on a full-time basis at our Broadway location in Nedlands, Western Australia. This is an exciting opportunity to begin a rewarding career in the baking and pastry industry, working alongside experienced bakers in a professional bakery environment. As an apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of baking, from bread production to pastry work, whilst developing the technical skills and knowledge required to become a qualified baker. This role is instrumental in building the next generation of skilled bakers at Common Bakery.

Key responsibilities

• Assisting experienced bakers in the preparation and production of a variety of breads, pastries, and baked goods

• Learning and applying proper mixing, kneading, shaping, and baking techniques under supervision

• Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards in the bakery, including equipment cleaning and workspace organisation

• Following recipes and bakery procedures accurately to ensure consistent product quality

• Assisting with ingredient preparation, measurement, and stock rotation

• Supporting the bakery team during peak production times

• Learning food safety and health and hygiene regulations relevant to bakery operations

• Gradually developing independence in baking tasks as skills progress through the apprenticeship

What we're looking for

• A genuine passion and enthusiasm for baking and the pastry arts

• The ability to work early morning shifts, as bakery operations typically begin before dawn

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and cleanliness

• Physical fitness and the ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks

• Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic

• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

• A willingness to learn and take on feedback constructively

• Good communication skills and a positive attitude

• Year 10 or equivalent education level (or demonstrated equivalent knowledge)

• A valid Food Handlers Certificate or willingness to obtain one
