About the role
We are looking for an experienced and motivated cancer researcher to join the Translational Radiation Biology and Oncology team at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. The Mikalya Vibes DMG Research Fellow will lead research focused on Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG/DIPG), one of the most challenging and aggressive brain tumours, with the aim of improving treatment options and outcomes for patients. This is an opportunity to develop and lead an independent research program investigating the biology of DMG and mechanisms of treatment resistance, including radiation resistance, tumour metabolism and hypoxia. You will have the opportunity to develop your own research ideas, build collaborations, contribute to competitive funding applications and work closely with researchers and clinicians to translate promising discoveries towards the clinic.
The level of appointment is flexible and may suit a Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist, depending on experience and track record.
Key responsibilities
Develop and lead research projects focused on DMG/DIPG
Investigate the molecular, cellular and treatment biology of aggressive brain tumours
Conduct pre-clinical radiation and drug testing using relevant cancer models
Investigate mechanisms of treatment resistance
Identify and develop promising therapeutic approaches
Build collaborations with researchers, clinicians and industry partners
Contribute to competitive grant applications and research funding
Publish and present research findings nationally and internationally
Supervise and mentor students and junior researchers
Contribute to a safe, collaborative and inclusive research environment
About you
A PhD or equivalent in cancer biology, molecular biology, genetics, immunology or a related biomedical discipline
At least 2 years' postdoctoral research experience, or equivalent experience appropriate to the level of appointment
Experience independently conducting animal experiments
A strong publication record and demonstrated research capability
Experience in cancer biology, radiation biology, molecular biology, genetics, immunology or a related field
Experience with pre-clinical cancer models
The ability to independently design, manage and lead research projects
Strong scientific writing, communication and collaboration skills
Experience with competitive research funding is highly desirable
Experience supervising or mentoring junior researchers is desirable
