The Head of Army Cadets at The Scots College serves as the effective Head of the Scots College Cadet Unit, responsible for the leadership, development, and delivery of all aspects of the program, and for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students and staff. This is a College-wide leadership position that inspires and engages boys across all campuses, ensuring that the Cadet Unit provides opportunities for adventure, leadership, and service in alignment with the College's Vision, Mission, and Values. The Head of Army Cadets ensures that the program reflects the College's commitment to developing well-rounded young men of faith, character, and integrity through challenge, teamwork, and experiential learning within the Brave Hearts, Bold Minds philosophy.

Key Accountabilities:

Cultural Leadership

• Promote and model the Vision and Values of The Scots College within all aspects of the Cadet Unit.
• Ensure that the ethos of the Cadet Unit supports the College’s Christian foundation and contributes to the spiritual and moral formation of the boys.
• Foster a climate of respect, care, and service within the Cadet community, modelling the College’s values of truth, honour, loyalty, and commitment.
• Encourage the development of leadership, teamwork, and resilience among all cadets.
• Ensure the Cadet Unit plays an active role in College and community life, including participation in ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies and other civic events. Ensure unit readiness for all ceremonial tasks for College and external audiences including the Annual Parade of Remembrance, and ANZAC Day services.

Vision, Mission, and Program Development

• Establish and maintain a clear ethos and purpose for the Cadet Unit aligned with the Australian Army Cadets (AAC) framework and the College’s educational philosophy.
• Lead the development, planning, and delivery of a comprehensive Cadet curriculum that fosters character, leadership, and adventure.
• Ensure that the Cadet program integrates effectively with the College’s broader co-curricular program. Maintain and actively collaborate with Pipes and Drums, Music and other co-curricular activities
• Continuously review and improve the Cadet program to ensure it remains contemporary, engaging, and consistent with the College’s mission.

Leadership and Management

• Serve as the Commanding Officer of The Scots College Cadet Unit, overseeing the structure, organisation, and leadership appointments within the Unit.
• Maintain discipline in accordance with AAC policy, procedures, and the College’s standards of conduct.
• Lead, develop, and support staff involved in the Cadet Unit, ensuring that induction, training, and professional learning requirements are met.
• Promote a collaborative and respectful environment where all members of the Unit are valued and supported.

Operations and Compliance

• Ensure the operational readiness and effectiveness of the Cadet Unit across all campuses.
• Liaise with the Australian Army Cadets (AAC) to ensure full compliance with all regulatory, training, and safety standards, ensuring all risk, compliance, training, correspondence with AAC Headquarters is maintained and completed in a timely manner.
• Oversee all aspects of risk management, ensuring activities meet the highest standards of safety and duty of care.
• Manage and maintain Cadet facilities, equipment, and stores to ensure they are secure and operationally sound.
• Coordinate the Cadet calendar, including parades, annual camps, leadership and promotion courses, bivouacs, and ceremonial events.

Program Administration

• Manage the Cadet Unit’s budget, staffing, and resourcing in a responsible and transparent manner.
• Coordinate communication with students, parents, staff, and external stakeholders, ensuring clarity and timeliness.
• Maintain accurate records including activity briefs, joining instructions, risk assessments, medical plans, attendance registers, and AAC reporting.
• Notify the chain of command of any Critical Incidents or matters that meet the Commander’s

Critical Information Requirements (CCIR).

• Ensure that all activities receive the necessary approvals and are compliant with both AAC and College policies.

Training and Development

• Facilitate training opportunities for students and staff, including leadership, skills, and promotional courses.
• Develop and oversee a structured leadership development program within the Cadet Unit.
• Ensure staff are appropriately qualified and equipped to deliver all aspects of the Cadet program effectively and safely.

Health, Safety, and Wellbeing

• Ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of all students and staff participating in Cadet activities.
• Implement effective supervision, risk management, and emergency response procedures.
• Manage incidents in line with College and AAC procedures, ensuring transparent communication and follow-up.

Selection Criteria

• Current or willing membership of the Australian Army Cadets (AAC).
• Commissioned Officer within the AAC or willingness to obtain commission.
• (Preferred) Current NSW Teacher Accreditation; if not, a background in Youth Work, Education Support, Policing, the Military, or Behavioural Sciences.
• Must hold valid WWCC and NPC
• Demonstrated understanding of command, administration, training, logistics, and community engagement in a Cadet or similar context.
• Strong operational and organisational skills, including proficiency with technology and administrative systems.
• Proven ability to build effective teams and foster collaboration.
• Demonstrated capacity to identify, assess, and manage risk in complex outdoor or experiential programs.
• Strong alignment with The Scots College’s Christian Faith and Values, demonstrating relational and values-based leadership.
• Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a focus on practical and positive outcomes.
• Ability to lead with composure, clarity, and fairness under pressure.
