Your opportunity

Southern Cross University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking a passionate Postdoctoral Researcher in Geochronology and Applied Geochemistry. This is an opportunity to establish yourself as an independent researcher within a high-performing laboratory, with access to advanced analytical instrumentation and strong academic and technical support. While the research has a strong geochronology and archaeology focus, applications of geochemistry across broader fields – particularly health and medicine – are welcomed.

You will make an impact by:

• Independently contribute to the planning, development and delivery of research activities associated with the Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre project.
• Design and conduct geochemical and geochronological analyses of archaeological and cultural heritage materials.
• Develop innovative methodologies for dating inorganic materials from arid and challenging depositional environments.
• Plan and undertake fieldwork within remote regions of Australia, collaborating with industry partners, Traditional Owners and Training Centre researchers.

What you will bring

You’re an emerging researcher with a strong foundation in geochemistry, geochronology, analytical chemistry or a related discipline, ready to take the next step towards research independence. You will bring curiosity, technical expertise and the ability to work confidently both independently and collaboratively across disciplines.

To succeed in this role, you will also need:

• PhD in geochemistry, analytical chemistry, geochronology, archaeological science, Earth sciences, environmental sciences, geosciences, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience applying geochemical, isotopic or analytical chemistry techniques.
• A publication record relative to career stage, and excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with academic, industry and community partners

While not essential, it would be highly regarded if you also bring experience with:

• Uranium-series dating, isotope geochemistry, mass spectrometry, laser ablation or other geochronological techniques
• ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS or LA-MC-ICP-MS instrumentation
• Organic geochemistry or applications of geochemistry in health, medicine, biomineralisation or environmental science
• HDR student supervision or mentoring
• Working with Indigenous communities

Your opportunity is:

• Full-time, fixed term (5 years)
• Located at Lismore, NSW 2480.
• ACAD Level B. The base salary ranges from $114,482 - $135,392 per annum, plus 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation. The total remuneration package is up to $158,409.
