Sustainability Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a practical and commercially focused Green Star & Sustainability Engineer to champion and coordinate the delivery of Green Star outcomes across a portfolio of commercial/ industrial construction projects.

This is not a purely administrative or compliance-based sustainability role. You’ll act as the critical link between project teams, consultants, estimators, design teams and project delivery staff, ensuring sustainability commitments are realistic, achievable and aligned with project objectives from inception through to certification.

Working closely with the team, you’ll help establish the most effective Green Star pathway for each project, challenge assumptions, identify practical solutions, and drive successful outcomes throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Champion Green Star certification delivery across multiple construction projects in conjunction with our procurement manager.
• Develop and manage Green Star pathways from project commencement through to certification.
• Work closely with project teams to proactively identify and collect evidence required for Green Star submissions.
• Coordinate with Green Star consultants and assessors to ensure project requirements are clearly understood and achieved.
• Provide practical sustainability solutions that balance sustainability objectives with commercial and construction realities.
• Attend and contribute to key project milestones, design reviews and project meetings.
• Act as the sustainability “glue” between consultants, delivery teams, estimators, procurement and design stakeholders.
• Monitor project progress against sustainability commitments and proactively manage risks to certification outcomes.
• Support the development and continuous improvement of Green Star systems, trackers, processes and reporting tools.
• Provide sustainability feedback and lessons learned to pre-construction and estimating teams.
• Stay informed of Green Star updates, industry trends, innovations and emerging sustainable products and practices.

About You

We’re looking for someone who combines sustainability expertise with strong commercial awareness and practical construction knowledge.

You’ll be comfortable influencing stakeholders, driving outcomes and working independently across multiple projects.

Essential Experience

• Experience delivering Green Star projects.
• Strong understanding of Green Star rating tools and GBCA requirements.
• Exposure to Green Star Design & As Built and/or newer Green Star Buildings rating frameworks.
• Experience coordinating  team members, consultants and stakeholders.
• Construction industry experience, ideally working for a main contractor, builder or sustainability consultancy.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of outcomes.
• Highly organised, detail-oriented and process-driven.

Desirable Experience

• Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP) accreditation.
• Qualification in Sustainability, Engineering, Construction Management or a related field.
• Experience working on Tier 1 construction projects.
• Mechanical, services engineering or building services background.
• Experience using Green Star/GBCA portals and sustainability management systems.
• Knowledge of commissioning, building services and operational sustainability outcomes.
