Depot Supervisor – Drivers, Fleet & Operations

Take ownership of our Sydney depot operation

Can Club is a growing recycling collection business operating a fleet of collection trucks across Sydney, with operations expanding interstate.

We are looking for a practical, hands-on Depot Supervisor to take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of our Sydney depot.

This is a frontline operational role. You will be responsible for making sure we have the drivers, roadworthy trucks and depot resources needed to get the job done safely and efficiently each day.

Our customer service, routing and first-line driver support are handled centrally, allowing you to concentrate on managing the physical Sydney operation.

What you'll be responsible for

Drivers

• Supervise and support our Sydney drivers
• Recruit, onboard and train new drivers
• Manage attendance, punctuality, leave and driver availability
• Monitor driver performance and address performance or conduct issues
• Make sure drivers understand and follow our operating and safety procedures
• Help build a reliable, accountable and productive driver team

Fleet

• Take day-to-day responsibility for our Sydney vehicle fleet
• Ensure vehicle pre-start checks and reported defects are followed up
• Coordinate servicing, maintenance, tyres and repairs
• Work with mechanics and other service providers
• Keep on top of vehicle issues until they are resolved
• Help maximise vehicle availability and minimise unnecessary downtime

You do not need to be a mechanic, but you do need to be comfortable taking ownership of fleet maintenance and following vehicle issues through.

Depot & yard

• Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Sydney depot and yard
• Supervise our yardhand
• Oversee the receiving, storage, preparation, cleaning and movement of bins
• Maintain a safe, clean and organised depot
• Ensure equipment and operational resources are available when required

Safety & compliance

• Maintain good day-to-day WHS and operational discipline
• Follow up vehicle and driver compliance requirements
• Respond to and manage operational incidents and accidents
• Make sure required checks, records and procedures are being completed

Third-party counting depots

Our drivers visit a number of third-party recycling/counting depots across Sydney during their routes.

You will build strong working relationships with these depot operators and make periodic site visits to:

• Understand how our drivers are interacting with each depot
• Identify causes of unnecessary waiting or turnaround time
• Work constructively with depot staff to resolve operational issues
• Share practical assistance, training and process-improvement ideas where appropriate
• Make sure our own drivers are doing everything they can to move through the depots safely and efficiently

We currently use approximately five counting depots. Typically, we would expect each to be visited around once a month, with additional visits where there is a particular operational issue to resolve.

What you won't be responsible for

You won't spend your day designing delivery routes or answering customer-service enquiries.

These functions are handled by our central operations team.

Job titles aren't particularly important to us.

We are looking for someone who has practical experience in transport, logistics, waste/recycling, fleet or another hands-on operational environment and who is comfortable taking ownership.

You should be:

• Reliable and highly organised
• Comfortable supervising drivers and operational staff
• Prepared to hold people accountable for attendance and performance
• Practical and good at solving day-to-day problems
• Comfortable managing vehicle servicing, defects and repairs
• Confident dealing with mechanics, suppliers and external depot operators
• Calm when things don't go according to plan
• Comfortable using apps and basic computer systems
• Safety conscious
• Able to follow things through rather than simply passing problems on
• Comfortable working independently without constant direction

Experience supervising drivers and managing commercial vehicles will be highly regarded.

A growing operation

Can Club is growing, and so is our Sydney operation.

That means not every procedure is set in stone. We have systems and processes in place, but we are looking for someone who can also help us improve, simplify and document the way the depot operates as we grow.

If you prefer an environment where every situation already has a 50-page manual, this probably isn't the role for you.

If you enjoy taking responsibility, solving problems and making an operation work better, it could be a very good fit.

Pay: $85,000.00 – $95,000.00 per year
