Job description
The Role
The Commercial Associate Director sits within the Commercial Team at Boundless. The role designs and delivers the private-sector, capital and industry interventions in a commercial domain that move Australia to renewable energy superpower status by 2030.
Reporting to the Head of Commercial and working alongside the Industry Transformation Director, the role co-leads two sprints per year, taking each sprint from early strategy through to Board approval and deployment. The role scouts, shapes, commissions and owns projects end-to-end through to final acquittal, and leads or contributes to at least one Rapid Response each year.
This role carries a sharp specialist strategy and a high bar for direct impact alongside their sprint work. Twenty-five per cent of this role’s time is protected for direct impact outside sprints — engaging senior private-sector and government actors directly, convening coalitions where our coordination unlocks capital, demand or policy movement, and shaping positioning and narrative in the specialism. This is a senior, high-impact role combining strategic leadership and commercial judgement.
Key Responsibilities
Specialism strategy
- Holding and continually sharpening a clear, current, written strategy for your specialism as one of the Commercial pathways to a renewable energy superpower.
- Holding a point of view on what must shift in the specialism for the 2030 mission, where leverage sits, and where we should play.
- Carrying the narrative thread that connects the specialism strategy to the 2030 North Star, with the capacity to step across the Commercial team’s other specialisms so the team can flex and cover for each other.
Embedded relationships and market engagement
- Embedded in the private-sector, capital, industry, trade and government delivery networks, with trusted access to senior decision-makers, investors and industry leaders.
- Building new high-leverage relationships as priorities shift, and sustaining relationships across corporate, finance, supply-chain, government and philanthropic networks that compound over years.
Sprint co-leadership and project commissioning
- Co-leading two sprints per year — taking each from early strategy through gates to Board approval and deployment, holding portfolio coherence so projects add up to a single intervention, leading the sprint narrative and bringing co-funders along, and holding light legacy ownership post-deployment.
- Scouting and shaping projects across at least three sprints per year, then commissioning and owning them end-to-end through to final acquittal, including in sprints where this role is not a Co-Lead.
- Designing and executing interventions — grants, investments, partnerships and other mechanisms — that unlock private-sector capital and accelerate the transition, and commissioning research, modelling and analytical tools as needed.
Direct impact, Rapid Response and organisational leadership
- Using 25% of role capacity on direct impact and strategic initiatives outside sprints, deployed where coordination, capital or relationships offer unique leverage.
- Leading or contributing to at least one Rapid Response per year, and being particularly responsive to moments where capital, industry or policy windows unlock acceleration.
- Owning your work end-to-end, bringing courageous honesty to the team, and contributing specialism-domain learning to the design of future sprints.
Success Metrics
This role will be a success when:
- An up-to-date, sharp strategy for how we mobilise the commercial sector around energy supply, green exports, and new industries.
- Two sprints have been co-led from strategy through to Board approval and deployment, and at least one Rapid Response has been led or contributed to.
- A pipeline of projects has been scouted and shaped within the specialism, with high partner satisfaction across Captains and project partners, and Captains in specialism-facing coalitions who are confident and well supported.
- Direct impact has visibly shifted capital, industry or commercial coordination in the specialism, including at least one courageous partnership with an actor outside the traditional climate movement.
- Commissioning or producing thought leadership the rest of the climate ecosystem looks at, and documented learning has been shared with the team.
Skills
- Ability to read the commercial moment in your specialism ahead of the field, and to hold a clear, evolving point of view on what shifts it.
- Ability to set and lead a specialist commercial strategy that engages corporate and industrial sectors and drives increased ambition in the energy transition.
- Ability to design interventions that combine funding, capital, influence and coalition-building at scale.
- Advanced commercial and financial capability, enabling confident evaluation of funding structures, partnership models, and portfolio-level trade-offs.
- Ability to commission, guide, and interpret research, modelling, and analytical tools to inform commercial and market-shaping decisions.
- Ability to negotiate with senior private-sector and government actors with confidence and integrity.
- Ability to tell the story of commercial change in ways that land with both commercial and non-commercial audiences.
- Deep understanding of climate, energy, and industrial transition markets and the commercial levers that influence behaviour at scale.
Experience
- Senior-level experience leading commercial, investment, or market-facing functions within climate, energy, infrastructure, finance, or adjacent sectors.
- Demonstrated experience working with corporate and industrial stakeholders to influence strategy, investment, or operational decision-making.
- Demonstrated experience working with Australian and international philanthropists.
- Demonstrated experience deploying multi-million dollar funding programs.
- Experience originating and leading due diligence on investment opportunities, including assessing commercial viability, scalability, risk, and catalytic impact.
- Experience commissioning or overseeing research, modelling, or analytical work to support policy, commercial or strategic outcomes.
- Experience building and sustaining senior relationships across corporate, finance, trade, supply-chain, government and philanthropic networks.
- Strong organisational and project management skills with a track record of getting things done. Good at managing large amounts of information across multiple projects in a fast-moving team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely
- High emotional intelligence and accountability
- Low-ego with a track record of partnering to achieve results
