Lifeline Direct (LLD) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lifeline Australia. LLD focuses on supporting the development and ongoing implementation of suicide prevention and community wellbeing programs in the regions which we operate while looking for opportunities to grow Lifeline’s services in geographical areas where they do not currently exist.

LLD encompasses Lifeline Centres in Hunter region, Central Coast, Eastern Suburbs-Bondi, New England North West, Northern NSW, Geelong and South West Victoria, Northern and Western Melbourne. Our specialised and targeted services operate nationally via a telehealth model.

About the Position 

The 13 11 14 Telephone Crisis Support service offers support to people in crisis and emotional distress. 

While Lifeline Direct’s service is built on the back of our amazing Volunteers, we are seeking applications for several trained Crisis Supporters on a part time basis.  These positions are available ONLY for our night time service, working remotely. Shifts are 4 + hours and are completed between the hours of 10pm to 6am. 

Working fully remotely, you will play an integral role in keeping callers safe by assessing suicide risk and situations of distress and intervening and assisting accordingly. Our Crisis Supporters are pivotal in being the first point of contact for people seeking help and immediate relief from emotional distress.

About you

You are a passionate, empathetic and open-minded person.  You may have a background in social work, counselling or equivalent and possible experience in suicide intervention. Your strong communication skills along with your ability to work with a diverse range of people, families and carers, will be an asset for the role. You are driven to make a difference in people's lives whilst supporting at-risk people to stay safe, and you yourself may have lived experience. 

What the position requires

• Ideally you will have previous work experience in supporting people through a personal crisis – this may be (but not limited to) through a mental health nursing, counselling, social work or psychology background. 
• Relevant tertiary qualifications in counselling, psychology, social work, mental health, community services, nursing, or a related discipline are highly regarded.
• Sound computing and technology literacy skills, including the ability to confidently use multiple digital systems, accurately record call data during calls, and adapt to new technologies and platforms.
• Completed Crisis Supporter training, understanding Crisis Supporter CARE Practice Model of crisis support. 
• Ability to work from a private, quiet, and confidential workspace that supports client privacy, maintains confidentiality, and enables focused participation in crisis support activities.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills. 
• Demonstrated crisis intervention skills.
• An ability to express empathy and respect for others. 
• Flexibility and openness to change, diversity, and continuous improvement.
• A strong sense of self-awareness and willingness to personally develop through both individual and group supervision. 
• A capacity to understand and help others while maintaining clear boundaries of responsibility. 
• Flexibility and openness to change and diversity.
• Enthusiasm and willingness to learn. 
• Ability to assert oneself and willingness to speak up. 
• The ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other team members, leadership, and National Office staff as required.
