General Manager – Health And Safety
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
National Diploma in Safety Management or an equivalent qualification in Mining, Engineering or a related field. At least 10 years’ experience in Safety Management within the mining industry. SAMTRAC/SHEMTRAC Certificate. COMSOC 1 and 2 Certificates. Blasting Certificate – preferred. Valid Code EB/08 driver’s license. Experience in an integrated Risk Management Programme. Knowledge of applicable mining and construction legislation. Professional knowledge of Health and Safety practices and integrated SHE management systems within mining, construction and nuclear environments, including ISO 45001 and ISO 31001. Good written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels, both internally and externally Strong strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to operate effectively across geographically dispersed operations. Established network with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Minerals Council South Africa and Mine Health and Safety Council will be advantageous. RCAT (Root Cause Analysis Training) or equivalent investigation qualification – preferred.
Duties And Responsibilities (not Limited To)
Provide strategic Health and Safety guidance to the Board, CEO, EXCO, COOs, General Managers and operations. Develop, implement and maintain the Group Safety Management System and integrated Risk Management Programme aligned with strategic objectives and ISO 45001 requirements. Provide specialist advice on Health, Safety and Risk Management, including new projects, unusual conditions and corrective measures. Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, standards and Codes of Practice, and monitor legislative developments and their implications. Review and implement SHE policies, procedures, guidelines, control standards and amended Codes of Practice across the Group. Analyse safety trends and statistics, identify risks, drive corrective actions and provide monthly reports to the CEO, EXCO, COOs and General Managers. Drive continuous improvement in SHE controls, employee participation, management support and overall safety performance. Ensure Occupational Medical and Occupational Hygiene Services meet required standards and agreed KPIs. Provide functional leadership and manage reporting lines in alignment with the Group SHE strategy. Develop and mentor Health and Safety teams through coaching, knowledge sharing and on-the-job training. Participate in MOSH initiatives and facilitate implementation of relevant initiatives across the Group. Build effective relationships with consultants, regulatory authorities, government bodies and relevant industry organisations. Attend stakeholder meetings, seminars and forums to remain informed of Health and Safety and industry developments. Collaborate with internal departments and operations to strengthen SHE performance and improve safety statistics. Manage subordinates and functional reporting lines to ensure delivery against agreed objectives and responsibilities.
