About the opportunity:We are seeking a Senior Gas Inspector, Installations and Appliances (ASO7) to join the Office of the Technical Regulator within the Regulation and Compliance Division. This is a unique opportunity to step into a senior role at the forefront of gas safety regulation in South Australia, playing a critical role in ensuring gas installations and appliances meet legislative, safety and technical standards to protect the community. In this role, you will apply your deep technical expertise and regulatory knowledge to lead complex investigations, enforce compliance and provide authoritative advice to industry and stakeholders. You will also support and mentor inspectors, contribute to industry engagement and education activities, and drive consistent application of standards across the sector within a highly specialised regulatory environment.

Key Duties:

• Monitor and enforce compliance with legislative, safety and technical standards for gas installations and appliances across SA
• Lead and undertake complex investigations into incidents, complaints and non compliance matters, including serious breaches
• Provide expert technical and legislative advice to internal stakeholders, industry and consumers
• Mentor and support inspectors, contributing to team leadership and operational effectiveness
• Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with relevant standards and legislation
• Represent the department at industry forums and contribute to education and safety initiatives
• Contribute to policy, procedural development and continuous improvement activities

Key Selection Criteria:
Please address the following in your application:

• Demonstrated high level technical expertise in gas installation standards and legislation, including AS NZS 5601 Parts 1 and 2, AS NZS 1596 and the Gas Act 1997, with the ability to interpret and apply these requirements in a regulatory environment
• Demonstrated extensive experience working in the South Australian or an interstate gas industry (utility or private contractor) or with a Government Gas Regulator (particularly within a regulatory, advisory or gas contracting area).
• Proven ability to lead investigations and provide sound, evidence based recommendations
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence, negotiate and communicate effectively
• Experience providing leadership, mentoring and support within a technical or regulatory environment
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of type A gas appliances and components testing and certification schemes.

• Experience with complex gas installations and appliances in commercial or industrial environment will be highly regarded.
• Conversant with Biogas and Hydrogen gases and installations, or intend to acquire the knowledge through investigation and education is desirable.

Qualifications:

• We encourage holders of a current South Australian Gas-fitting Trade qualifications to apply (or equivalent interstate or overseas qualifications that has been recognised under a reciprocal licensing agreement with the South Australian Consumer and Business Services) that has enabled the applicant to gain a full (unrestricted) gas fitting worker’s registration. Conditions will read, in part, - can perform any gas fitting work.

Remuneration:
ASO7 classification
Salary range: $116,089  - $125,490 per annum (plus superannuation)
Full time 37.5 hours per week 75 hours per fortnight

Special Conditions:

• Participation in an after hours on call roster required
• Intrastate and interstate travel required, including overnight stays
• Current Class C driver licence essential
• Role involves investigation of serious incidents, including fatalities.
• Subject to a National Police Clearance
