Mechanical Fitter – Hydraulics & Gearboxes

Position SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join our team, specialising in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of hydraulic systems and industrial gearboxes supporting fixed and mobile plant equipment.
Key ResponsibilitiesHydraulicsStrip, inspect, repair, and rebuild hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, and pump drivesDiagnose hydraulic system faults (leaks, pressure loss, contamination, wear) and determine root causePerform seal kit replacements and component machining as requiredConduct functional and pressure testing of overhauled hydraulic componentsRead and interpret hydraulic circuit diagrams and schematicsGearboxesDismantle, inspect, and reassemble industrial/mobile equipment gearboxes to OEM tolerancesIdentify wear patterns, bearing/gear tooth damage, and determine repair vs. replace decisionsPerform gear train alignment, backlash checks, and shimmingReassemble using correct torque specifications and lubrication proceduresRun overhauled units on test bed and document resultsGeneral Mechanical / WorkshopOperate workshop machinery (lathes, mills, presses, grinders) to a basic-intermediate levelUse precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators)Interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and OEM specificationsComplete job cards, inspection reports, and maintenance records accuratelyMaintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environmentParticipate in Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Take 5, and other risk assessments
Required Qualifications & ExperienceTrade Certificate III in Mechanical Fitting / Fitter & Turner / Fitter & MachinistDemonstrated experience in hydraulic component overhaul (cylinders, pumps, motors)Demonstrated experience with industrial or mobile plant gearbox repair/rebuildAbility to read and interpret engineering drawings and hydraulic schematicsCompetent with precision measuring and inspection toolsDesirableForklift licenceDogging / Rigging ticketWelding/fabrication skills (MIG/TIG)Computer literacy (CMMS / maintenance systems)Personal AttributesStrong safety mindset and attention to detailAbility to work independently and within a teamGood problem-solving and fault-diagnosis skillsWillingness to work rotating rosters/shifts as required
