MC Earthmoving
About the role
If your idea of good safety is walking onto site with a clipboard and looking for everything, people are doing wrong, this probably isn't the job for you.
If you believe good HSEQ starts with listening, understanding the work, earning the trust of the crew and finding practical solutions that actually work on the ground – we'd like to hear from you.
MC Earthmoving is looking for an experienced HSEQ Manager to take ownership of our Health, Safety, Environment and Quality function and work alongside our people across a diverse range of civil construction, earthmoving, quarry and mining projects.
This isn't a role where you'll spend five days a week behind a desk.
You'll be in muddy boots, around big machines, talking with operators and Forepersons, visiting projects, investigating incidents, improving systems, preparing for ISO audits, and working directly with our management team.
Consultation over confrontation is how we do safety at MC Earthmoving.
Who We Are
MC Earthmoving is a well-established civil construction and earthmoving contractor delivering bulk earthworks, quarry overburden removal, dam construction and upgrades, tailings work, wetlands, subdivisions and major civil projects.
We work across Victoria on everything from long-term civil developments to quarries and mining projects.
We're practical, straight-talking and proud of the people who work for us.
Our leadership team is accessible and involved in the business. We don't want HSEQ sitting above operations telling people what to do - we want HSEQ working alongside operations to make what we do safer, better and smarter.
About the Role - The Real Version
You will take ownership of our HSEQ function, but you won't do it majority of it from an office.
One day you might be walking a project with a Foreperson reviewing a high-risk activity.
The next you could be investigating an incident, sitting with an operator to understand what actually happened, reviewing a SWMS, working through an environmental issue, completing safety observations or helping a Project Manager respond to a client's HSEQ requirements.
You might also find yourself sitting in a crib hut listening to a Foreman who's had a rough week.
And yes - if everyone is cleaning up and there's a broom beside you; we won't be horrified if you pick it up and help the team.
What You'll Own
Safety Culture - The Important Stuff
You will help us continue building a safety culture our people believe in.
That means:
building genuine relationships with Operators, Forepersons, Leading Hands, Managers and Directors.
coaching rather than policing.
listening to the people doing the work before deciding what the solution should be.
making it easy for people to speak up about hazards and near misses.
helping leaders make good HSEQ decisions; and
being confident enough to step in when something genuinely isn't safe.
Incidents, Risk & Learning
You will lead and support:
incident and near-miss investigations.
root cause analysis.
corrective and preventative actions
risk assessments and critical control reviews.
statutory and client reporting where required.
safety alerts and shared learning; and
follow-up to make sure actions are actually closed and effective.
We're interested in why something happened and how we prevent it happening again – not finding the quickest person to blame.
You will own and continually improve our Integrated Management System and help maintain certification to:
ISO 9001 – Quality
ISO 14001 – Environment
ISO 45001 – Health & Safety
You will coordinate internal and external audits, manage findings and corrective actions, maintain controlled documentation and help us continue simplifying our systems so they're compliant and useful.
You will develop and review:
SWMS
risk assessments.
HSEQ procedures
policies
critical controls
project-specific documentation; and
supporting forms and systems.
We want you talking to the people who actually perform the task.
If the SWMS says one thing and the crew has to do something completely different to get the job done, we haven't succeeded.
Site Assurance, Environment & Quality
You'll undertake site inspections, audits and spot checks across our operations and support teams with:
legislative compliance
environmental management
quality requirements and non-conformances
contractor compliance
plant and workshop safety
occupational health risks
emergency preparedness
corrective actions; and
client HSEQ requirements.
Training, Competencies & Engagement
You'll work closely with HR and operational leaders on:
employee and contractor inductions
toolbox talks people actually listen too.
competency and ticket management
compliance training
refresher training
first aid requirements
client inductions and portals and
competency reporting through Assignar.
You will also contribute to tenders, prequalification submissions, HSEQ reporting and continuous improvement projects across the business.
Who We're Looking For
Technical knowledge matters. But how you work with people matters just as much.
You will probably fit in well here if you're someone who:
can talk comfortably with an Operator in the morning and a director or client in the afternoon.
isn't afraid of difficult conversations when they're genuinely necessary.
asks questions before making assumptions.
can challenge something respectfully.
understands the difference between paperwork being compliant and work being safe.
sees a problem and starts working on the solution without waiting to be chased.
stays calm when something goes wrong.
enjoys being out on site.
takes pride in producing quality work; and
still believes there is always something new to learn.
Ideally, you'll have:
demonstrated HSEQ experience in civil construction, earthworks, mining, quarrying or another high-risk operational environment.
relevant tertiary qualifications in WHS/HSEQ or substantial relevant industry experience.
Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety or higher.
practical experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
strong knowledge of Victorian/Australian WHS/OHS legislation, Codes of Practice, and relevant standards.
experience developing and reviewing SWMS, risk assessments, policies, and procedures.
strong incident investigation and root cause analysis capability.
experience conducting site audits and inspections.
excellent written and verbal communication skills
the confidence to influence people at every level of a business; and
a current Australian driver's licence.
Experience in civil construction, bulk earthworks, mining or quarry environments will be highly regarded.
What We're Offering
This is a senior role with the opportunity to genuinely influence how HSEQ operates across our business.
You'll receive:
A good salary package - negotiable depending on experience and capability.
company vehicle.
full-time permanent employment.
approximately 40 hours per week plus reasonable overtime.
immediate start available.
autonomy and genuine ownership of the HSEQ function.
direct access to Directors and senior management.
diverse projects across civil construction, earthworks, quarry and mining environments.
opportunities to continue developing professionally.
a hardworking but easy-going team.
Most importantly, you'll have an opportunity to shape systems rather than simply inherit them.
Sound Like You?
Send us your resume and tell us a little about yourself.
We're interested in your qualifications and experience, of course.
But we'd also like to know how you approach safety, how you build trust with a crew and what good HSEQ looks like to you.
