Experience the Bellingham Difference with our marine construction solutions. Bellingham Marine is seeking qualified Shipwright to join our professional team. The ideal candidate must be reliable, results-driven, self-motivated, and committed to positively contribute to the team environment.
Key Responsibilities of the role include: Marine Fabrication & Construction Construct and fabricate concrete pontoon systems, pontoon hulls, decks, frames, fittings, and associated marine structures.
Prepare, construct, and modify moulds using timber, steel, concrete, fibreglass, and FRP materials. Assemble and fit out pontoon structures and marine components in accordance with approved drawings and specifications. Undertake structural fabrication, installation, repairs, refurbishment, and maintenance of marine structures.
Accurately measure, cut, assemble, and install structural components to required specifications and tolerances. Work effectively with concrete, steel, timber, fibreglass, and other marine construction materials. Plans, Drawings & Specifications
Read, interpret, and work from engineering drawings, construction plans, shop drawings, and technical specifications. Identify required materials, dimensions, tolerances, components, and construction methods. Ensure completed structures conform to design requirements and project specifications.
Identify and report discrepancies, defects, or potential construction issues before they affect project outcomes. Pontoon Assembly & Installation Coordinate and undertake the assembly and installation of pontoon systems and associated marine infrastructure.
Conduct pre-launch inspections, structural checks, measurements, and testing prior to launching. Assist with and supervise pontoon launching, positioning, alignment, connection, and installation procedures. Ensure marine structures are correctly secured, aligned, and installed in accordance with project requirements.
Conduct post-installation inspections and address defects or required adjustments. Team Leadership & Supervision Supervise and provide practical guidance to shipwrights, fabricators, tradespeople, and labourers.
Allocate tasks and coordinate daily fabrication and installation activities to meet project schedules. Monitor workmanship and ensure team members follow approved construction methods and safety procedures. Provide on-the-job training and technical support to less experienced team members.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, project managers, contractors, and other site personnel. Quality Assurance Inspect materials, components, moulds, assemblies, and completed structures to ensure quality requirements are met.
Identify defects and implement appropriate corrective actions. Maintain high standards of workmanship throughout fabrication, assembly, repair, and installation activities. Ensure work is completed in accordance with engineering requirements, company procedures, and applicable marine and construction standards.
Safety & Compliance Follow and promote safe work practices across workshop, construction, marine, and installation environments. Ensure tools, equipment, lifting equipment, and fabrication processes are used safely and correctly.
Maintain compliance with workplace health and safety requirements, environmental controls, and relevant marine construction standards. Identify hazards and take appropriate action to prevent incidents, injuries, and damage to equipment or structures. Repair & Maintenance
Diagnose and repair damaged or deteriorated pontoon structures and components. Carry out refurbishment and maintenance works to extend the service life of existing marine infrastructure. Replace, modify, or reinforce structural components where required.
Assess structural condition and provide practical recommendations for repair or replacement works. Key Skills & Competencies More than 5 years' experience in shipwrighting, marine fabrication, and pontoon construction.
Advanced practical knowledge of concrete pontoon systems and marina infrastructure. Strong ability to interpret plans, engineering drawings, and technical specifications. Experienced in mould design and construction using timber, steel, concrete, FRP, and fibreglass.
Strong fabrication and assembly skills across multiple marine construction materials. Experienced in pontoon launching, pre-launch testing, installation, alignment, and commissioning activities. Demonstrated leadership and team supervision capability.
Ability to work independently while effectively coordinating with project teams and contractors. Physically capable of working in demanding marine, workshop, and construction environments. Strong commitment to workplace safety, quality, productivity, and project deadlines.
Performance Expectations The position is expected to consistently deliver safe, high-quality marine structures while meeting project specifications, production targets, and installation schedules. The successful employee demonstrates strong technical capability, leadership, initiative, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to safety and quality.
