The Role

SMEC is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Drafter – Rail & Metro to join our Melbourne team. Working alongside industry-leading engineers, designers and project managers, you will play a key role in delivering major rail and metro infrastructure projects across Victoria and nationally.

Based in our Melbourne office, you will contribute to some of Australia's most significant rail and transport infrastructure programs while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across the broader SMEC Rail & Metro business. This is an opportunity to be involved in the delivery of complex infrastructure projects that help shape the future of sustainable transport networks.

As a Senior Drafter, you will provide advanced drafting and digital engineering expertise, lead the preparation of high-quality technical documentation, coordinate and review drafting activities, and support the successful delivery of multidisciplinary rail projects. You will also mentor and support developing team members while helping drive collaboration, quality and consistency across project teams. The role requires a strong level of technical drafting and modelling capability using specialist software, while ensuring client and SMEC standards are consistently achieved.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality rail and metro drafting and modelling outputs across a variety of project stages.
• Lead and coordinate a small team of drafters, reviewing and directing technical work, monitoring workloads and project deliverables, and supporting the professional development of team members
• Prepare conceptual, detailed design and construction documentation in accordance with client and SMEC standards.
• Coordinate effectively with engineers, designers, project managers and multidisciplinary teams.
• Review, check and validate documentation to maintain quality assurance standards.
• Support project delivery by managing priorities, meeting deadlines and contributing to project performance.
• Provide mentoring, coaching and technical guidance to developing drafters and team members, fostering capability development and technical excellence within the team.
• Contribute to innovation, digital delivery initiatives and continuous improvement of drafting processes.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, project stakeholders and internal teams.
• Support business development opportunities and contribute to the ongoing success of the Rail & Metro team.

About You

You are a highly capable Senior Drafter with strong experience delivering rail, metro or major transport infrastructure projects. In addition to your technical expertise, you have demonstrated experience leading drafting teams, coordinating project deliverables and mentoring team members within multidisciplinary project environments.

You will bring:

• 6+ years of drafting and digital delivery within Rail & Metro projects.
• Strong understanding of project delivery requirements, resourcing management and multidisciplinary design coordination.
• Advanced proficiency with industry drafting and modelling software such as MicroStation, OpenRail, AutoCAD, Revit or similar platforms.
• Strong understanding of engineering documentation standards, quality assurance processes and design coordination.
• Experience producing detailed design and construction documentation.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience mentoring and supporting junior drafting professionals.
• A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement.
